Reptile carpets are nasty substrate. They are a major pain to clean and impossible to spot clean. They are also bacteria lovers.

I'm not sure I understand how he doesn't touch it.
Put it in his cage and take out anything that could elevate him (branches and such) for a week or so.
I've never heard of a problem with adapting to aspen before.
