Preparing for hurricane

I was wondering the same thing. We don't get a lot of hurricanes up here in Virginia, but on occasion we get the bad tail end of one or we actually have one hit us like Isabelle. With Isabelle, we were out of power for two weeks.

I was wondering what I would do if the power goes out when its warm outside. Its been staying in the mid to upper 80s here. If a storm were to hit and our power goes out, what is the maximum temperature they can handle without it having a negative effect on them. In the case of power going out in the winter, what is the minimum temperature.

What about rats? What temperatures can they handle.

My fiance and I are going to put together a list of emergency "power outage supplies". What should we add to the list for our animals? Especially the snakes and rats.

Obviously the big concern is for New Orleans. The 3 day path seems to show a direct or indirect hit there. I guess the question will be, did the Army do a good enough job strengthening the levees?

Well unless you have been through these storms they are hard to understand, New Orleans is the main target but there will be a large area affected by this... The storm has begun allready, it is raining like crazy and there is 60 mile an hour winds here, and the storm hasnt made landfall.. Ivan rocked pensacola the year before Katrina and did some serious damage here. Katrina hit New Orleans and still left us without power or gas for over a week..

Im in Pensacola we are on the furthest west part of the panhandle in Florida. And no they have been on TV saying the levy's havnt been strengthened because they havnt had time yet..

If Im gone for a while guys, Ill be back as soon as we get power and internet back...

We are doing ok her still. No winds yet. I just got back from Sean's, and we were able to get his three generators running, and just got back from getting an extra 100 gallons of gas. I do have 2 cases of beer, so we should be fine.

I can tell you that during the day, the rats probably got as hot as 88 degrees. What I did, was to crank the air down to about 65 in the evening, and let the rats be comfortable all night. Then when we got up in the morning, we turn the fans back on for the rats. We still had pretty good production, and lost very few rats. If anyone needs some further advice, please feel free to give us a call. We managed to figure out how to do it after Katrina, and went without power for 31 days.

As long as we have internet, I'll keep everyone posted on how we do.

Only 2 cases of beer? LOL sounds to me like your not prepared for the hurricane season... Anyways I hope everyone on the Emerald Coast and thier animals are safe...

I remember reading in VPI's book that they let the whole place get hot during the warmest couple weeks of summer. They do not feed the snakes, just before and during the hot weeks, snakes can take the heat better on an empty stomach.

they will do fine i have a back room that doesnt have a/c but the room connected to does during the day its hits about 84-85 they are fine no probs and the feeding thing wouldnt it be just normal to feed them i mean they do use the under heat to help them break down the rat
