    New here with cage question

Hello, I got our first ball in June at the Repticon show in Jacksonville and our 2nd at the Daytona show. My brother in law got the 1st one for my daughter which I ended up taking care of. It got an RI and I had to give it shots and he never tried to bite me. He is well now and a nice calm snake that is never aggressive, will just hang out. My other daughter wanted one for herself and it had to be a female. The 2nd one is ornery and hisses at me when I go into her tank at all. She is all over her tank at night and does not wrap around my hand when I hold her, just tries to crawl right off.

Anyway I have them both in Glass tanks as well as a beardie in a 40 long. I was never a snake person but do like the Ball Pythons now due to the male and would like a spider and maybe an albino next year. I have been looking at the stackable type setups like vision and the ones from custom cages since I don't have room for a bunch of glass tanks in my house. Any advice on these?

First off you need to seperate those animals, a ball python should be housed by itself, and definatly not with a baerdie in the same tank... Ball pythons can fight with each other and do regularly display dominance over each other... If you ever see them laying together and one is on top of the other, the one on top is displaying dominance...

The snake that is giving you problems is probably very stressed out, they are very secretive creatures that enjoy solitude... Also a 40g long tank is too big, a 20g long tank will keep a BP for thier entire life.

Try Reptile Basics, they make some great rack systems.

Re: New here with cage question

Sorry got tired of typing. The Beardie is in the 40 long in the living room, the male ball is in a 20 long in my room, and the female ball is in a 10 gallon. She probably is stressed since she just came home Sunday from the show. I want to get new stackable cages to take less space so just to clarify none of them are together or will be together.

Or you could easily build your own. Check out our DIY section!

Congrats on the second BP. Just let her settle in and don't worry about her acting up right now. They are often stressed and defensive at first, especially babies. If you think about it the snake has gone from the only home it knew in a tub at the breeders, through the crazy place that is Daytona then into your home - that's a lot to take in when you only have a small, very instinctive snake brain.

i would go with www.reptilebasics.com i bought one of their 4ft long cages at a show for my 2 small ball pythons (i devided the cage myself so i can take the divider out in the future) and i will be picking up another next month. i just love the look of these cages and the fact that they are very well built and easy to clean.

    Reptile Basics 2x3x1 cage: http://www.reptilebasics.com/2x3-Cag...h-p-16286.html.
I have these and they work great and can be stacked three high and will keep a male or female for its entire life

If money isn't really a bother, these cages are awesome. Very strong, very light and the lights and UTH, can all be removed WITHOUT having to unstack.

Re: New here with cage question

I'm sorry, what did you mean by 'ornery'?
    Do you mean Axanthic?

Just give her some time to settle in, give her plenty of plant cover and hides and make sure the cage is in a quiet area. Too much traffic and noise could stress her out. You should always give a snake about a week alone to settle in to their new environment.

She should calm down eventually. :]
