will there ever be a solution to shipping live rodents?
Title pretty much says it all... Is there ever going to be a way to ship live rodents? Is there anything we as a community can do to try to make it happen?

Live rodents can be shipped via air freight.
Hope this helps.

It can and does happen. The only thing holding most people back is cost to ship(all rodents need a vet's certificate stating they are in good health, proper metal caging deemed worthy to ship in, and actual frieght), and a lot of private carriers do not take live rodents.

thank you Adam...
Let me rephrase the title! Will there ever be a cost effective solution to shipping live rodents???? Is there anything we can do as a community to try to make this happen?

Re: will there ever be a solution to shipping live rodents?
I talked to a buddy of mine (semi-local) that has live rodents shipped to him via Spee-dee Delivery from a rodent breeder in the Twin Cities... before speaking to him, I didn't know such a thing was plausible... hopefully it can be my new source of live food.

If by "cost effective", you're considering the possibility of an overnight carrier like FedEx or UPS providing a service for shipping live rodents ... I just don't see how it would ever be cost effective.
Even if the overnight carriers were willing to take on the responsibility of providing the care needed to ship mammals, the federal regulations for the safe transport of live mammals (cages, health certs, etc) coupled with the prices overnight carriers charge based on weight/dimensional weight ... it seems like air freight will always be the most cost effective solution.
Even with snakes, in some cases it's cheaper for me to ship from Maryland to the West Cost via air cargo than it is to use FedEx ... and snakes don't require 1/10th of the overhead needed to safely ship rodents.
Just my $.02

I used to haul ground cargo for a couple of the "big guys" in the shipping industry. Trust me when I say you don't want any animal being shipped that way.

I always had that feeling. I waited outside once for an animal to arrive via UPS... Well the guy fumbled around with the boxes as he got out of the truck... Then handed me the box Marked very clearly marked "Harmless Live Animal, Handle With care, This side Up" completely upside down. I had one extremely Pissed Chameleon when I opened the box.
The price of Oil and Gasoline is not going to help this dilemma.
