I'm not sure that anyone's ever done the kind of wild studies I wish I could find on ball pythons (if they have done anything indepth like that please someone post a link).

From what I understand though of ball pythons in the wild, these are ambush predators - not active hunters. So realistically I doubt they come barrelling out of any burrow they have to race around the area actively hunting prey. If they are anything like my own captive bp's, they probably do the peek out of a safe place and hope dinner wanders by. As I said though, this is just a thought as I've not read a really good study on their natural habits.
