BEST thermostat
Ok I know I need a thermostat...but which one is best? And maybe economical for an owner of one snake? I saw one mentioned in the sticky thread...I just like opinions. And where do you get them? I was told by one person that Lowes sells them but I looked and when I asked for help and told the associate what it was for...well, I got the "look"....the look a person gives you when they think you are crazy...

Re: BEST thermostat
The best for reptiles is probably Herpstat or Helix. The next best would be Johnson or Ranco. You can take a look at a bunch of them on this page from Reptile Basics.
The only thermostat you will probably find at Lowes is for your home heating system... definitely not for a reptile environment.

You'll need to check http//:www.spyderrobotics.com to see the Herpstat; Rich doesn't sell those for some reason

Re: BEST thermostat
Well since the title is "Best" I say the Herpstat Pro. It can run 4 different heating sources with their own probes and individual night drop settings or none if needed. With one I run 2 racks, ambient heat of snake room and a large fridge incubator. It is extremely accurate/precise.

How does it work for heating the snake room? Do you have a heater under 400w or did you wire it to a relay? I like that idea..

Re: BEST thermostat
Good post Wolfsnaps, in the end you should post which one you chose...I am having a very hard choosing one myself.
Plus I think I need 3 of them, one for each tank I imagine. Good luck in your search.

Not necessarily. They are rated on wattage and if your tanks run the same type of heat source then there is a good chance that one t'stat will run them all.
Buying the best t'stat that you can afford is a wise choice

Re: BEST thermostat
Abby, If all 3 tanks are setup identical including heating pads you can run them off a single thermostat. However you said you have 6 heat pads, If you have a hot and cool heat pad you will need 2 thermstats (or a single herpstat II) one for the hot temperature and one for the cold temperature.
You set the probe on one tank and plug all the heating pads into the one thermostat and it will keep them at similar temps (may not be exactly the same but close enough) I have 2 racks running off one herpstat (10 bins in total)
