Breeding Rabbits...
I have a friend that is getting rid of 3 female rabbits along with 3 fixed males...
i plan on craiglisting the males and buying a non fixed male at the show this weekend...
my main question is, if i have a 1.3 group, do i put the females in their own cage to have the babies, or do i just leave them...
or would it be best to have the male in his own cage and move the females in to breed... if so can i leave the females all together or should i separate?
Thanks

Re: Breeding Rabbits...
Move the male in with the females, but try and stager the breedings between females by a week or two. So you will always have babies!!! I recommend looking for new zealand rabbits, they are a meat type. Or californian rabbits ( I think they are calis). If not just get thoughs females and just c02 the males!

Re: Breeding Rabbits...
well, my plan is to breed them, and stager it... but im going to put an add up on craigslist for the 3 males, and every so offten once i have had some litters or whatever they are called, put a couple up on there too... and save up some money for some of the meat type... but i figure these ones will start me off well... =] wont hurt any way....
do i need to separate the girls seeing as i plan on keeping them in a hutch...? like for when they have their babies? or will it be ok to leave the females together?

Re: Breeding Rabbits...
no i dont...
im hoping to be able to pick them up tomorrow -- but it will prolly be wednesday...
i will ask for pics tho...
i do know that the males each have their own cage, so i might end up putting the male in his own, (once i get rid of the fixed guys)
and rotate the girls into a cage... i have it in my head, idk how to put it =]

Re: Breeding Rabbits...
You'll need to let the does and buck see each other for about a week before breeding. Put their cages near one another or something like that. For the actual breeding you should put the doe into the buck's cage. But once they've gone at it a couple of times, she should be put into her own cage with a nest box.
Just please don't put them into tiny cages and never let them out to run around. I know they're breeders, but rabbits are VERY social creatures and they need time to exercise outside of the cage every day. They also need a special diet which consists primarily (if not solely) of fresh, leafy greens. A rabbit's double-stomach is easy to upset. Here's a link to a great page about rabbit nutrition:

Please do your research, and don't just treat them as food.

Re: Breeding Rabbits...
oh i know, any bunny breeding for food is kept as a pet =D
rabbits are cool...
but thats why i only want a few does, i have done alot of research sense i got the boas... infact i have two tabs open of different breeding pages...
i used to have pet rabbits, so i know how to care for them.
and for my own sanity, im going to invest in making a CO2 thing...

they wont be in tiny cages either, they come with a two story hutch for the females, and i'll have them in seprate cages when they have their babies...
they will have a grass area in the back to have some exersize. i'll prolly get a pen to put them in...
knowing my past with breeding rats, i will prolly mess around with genetics and colors.... =]

Re: Breeding Rabbits...
I tried and they always fight. I've been breeding rabbits for 4 years and I have all my females in separate cages. And you always bring the females to the males. If one as too many babies and the other less, you can switch some to the one that has less babies. Also, you can keep the babies together after a month (they should eat hay and pellets at one month old). As soon as I see them eat, I separate them from the mother. I put them all together in one big cages or on the floor. You can breed the female again 45 days after she gave birth. The babies come at aabout 31 or 32 days. Mine almost always do at 31 days. If you need more info, those hesitate to email me.
Hope it helps!
