thinking about switching to tubs

My interest in snakes has consumed me and to be able to accomodate more snakes I am thinking about switching from glass aquariums to tubs. I had a question about size and heating. Can you use a normal uth and do you place in under the tub like a glass aquarium. Also I have a few different species and I was wondering what the rule of thumb for size is thanks.

If there's one thing tubs have over tanks...it's space efficiency. Even I have to admit that...

Yes, you can use UTHs on tubs:


You just tape them on with foil tape. DO NOT use the adhesive of the pad unless you really want that UTH there for good.

Size rules are kinda vague from what I've seen... but I keep them similar to the size rules of a tank. The enclosure L+W should equal half the length of the snake. And when I use tubs, I use 10-12" tall tubs. I hate how restrictive the short ones are, especially for more active species.

the uth that i have are stuck on with their adhesive. are they still useable for the tub or do i need to get new ones?

It is possible to remove them, and I believe someone made a thread with instructions around here somewhere... but it's tricky and if not done right the UTH can break. Basically, you have to move slow and keep the UTH from bending at all costs. That's why using foil tape is so much easier.

I'd say, try removing one. If you can get that off straight and true then go ahead with the others. If not, you'll have to pick up some more.

Actually, removing a UTH with sticky, can and normally does damage the UTH and causes hot spots on the UTH.

the foil tape is heat resistant enough to keep the UTH on?

Foil tape is commonly used on heating ducts. It is, in fact, one of the ONLY tapes that will stay stuck on even with the pad at full power (tho of course you shouldn't have it that way. ).
