If you couldn't tell I'm pretty passionate about this subject. When I lived in Hawaii EVERYTHING was illegal to keep and even if you were willing to break the law you couldn't get anything. Not that I condone that or anything. In fact, I understood the critical balance of Hawaii. We were constantly educated about our environment since that was our main source of revenue (tourism).
Regardless I was extremely depressed when I moved to Georgia. In fact, my only consulation was the fact that I could own some cool animals. I even had a ferret named Pepsi when I first moved here and he was awesome. The idea that our government would strip away these rights makes me pretty pissed to say the least.
What about the environment of the continental US you may ask? Well, since the arrival of Europeans it has been a plunge downhill. Believe it or not, we use to have some impressive coral reef systems. MAN is the biggest threat to our environment not these animals. As I stated earlier unless our government is willing to start by outlawing cats and dogs then they can keep their legislative mouths shut.
I am sure there are certain animals that can have a devastating impact on our ecosystems. I know there are some mussels that have caused a huge amount of damage around the world. But guess how they got there, on our freakin freighters. I am sorry but I don't see the validity of hordes of ASF's and ferrets taking over California. Hell, the cats would kill them. Maybe not the ferrets. Pepsi would take on my rotteweiler with no hesitation.
All I'm basically saying is the damage has already been done. When European ships first arrived they brought rats, mice, cats, and later on certain species of mussels. How are you gonna screw up something that is already shot to hell and back.
Just my 2 cents.
