Why you need to selectively breed

Here is why I posted. She is a Black Pastel. A very light Black Pastel...

Here is a half sibling to her.



I was trying to breed for darker, and yet somehow the Black Pastel male managed to in one day overwhelm the other males chances with the female.

This is the mom.





I was stunned at the absolute difference between her clutch and those of the other females (darker animals)

Now depending on what you are going for, this may have been something you would have wanted to make, but she is not the most stunning of Black Pastels by any means.

I plan on using her for Pewters and the lighter morphs to make them pop a bit more.

The reason why I posted this is that it may not be the ultimate of what YOU see in the morph, but they are and can be used to make other things much more interesting.


Is she ugly?? Not to me...

Is she the best example of the morph?? Probably not. Some people didn't even know what she is..

Is she a Black Pastel?? Absolutely



Look into your projects and use your animals wisely.

Breed for what you think will enhance the animals for the future!

I have a black pastel male that looks very similar. I'm hoping to put him with a real dark normal female for the same reason. But I also have him lined up to spend time with a nice bb cinny girl this fall as well....

I think the "normal" influence in the morphs is huge and you should always take that in to account when breeding.

I couldn't agree more Heather. It's very interesting to see the color changes of one particular morph. Something to remember is morphs are probably to some degree just as variable as normals are.

If someone would have said these were black pastels I probably would have believed them.......however they are cinnies from a very dark normal.

Excellent post, Heather! It reminds folks that it's not just about tossing a male and a female snake together and hoping for whatever. There's so much more to it and then there's revamping ideas based on what you do end up hatching out (since we all know the Ball Python Gods occasionally like to laugh their butts off at our pitiful efforts).
