Re: aLI HAS A MAJOR RI! PLEASE HELP Hurry hurry hurry!
Culture, culture culture!! DO IT! Baytril may work with the spider if he's not had it very long and it's not progressed to anything more than sticky mucous in the mouth. If he's open-mouth breathing and bubbling, then it likely won't work as well.
Your Albino should have been on a month-long treatment of every 48-72 hour injections. 2 weeks of shots is nothing to slow-healing reptiles. When my het Pied Jungle male was shipped, he came down with a stress RI, and I put him on Baytril every 48-hours for a good month. He's recovered just fine(that was last year) and never had a relapse.
When they have relapses, that's when the bacteria gets even more resistant to the antibiotics you're using. Which means they won't work as well, if at all.
You need to get a culture done on the Albino, get a stronger antibiotic and KEEP HER ON IT for a solid month or longer. Fortaz is a good one, but it's expensive and has to be kept in the freezer. It's given every 72 hours.
What are her temperatures? If they are below 95 on the hot side, bump them up to 96/86, with a high relative humidity(65-75%). Soaking her every other day or so will hydrate her and help keep her kidneys flushed out(so they don't fail).
If you can get a nebulizer(I can post pictures of what I use and the container it is attached to that the animal goes in) from a pharmacy, you can rent one, and the vet can make up a concoction of antibiotics and some bronchodilators(even just plain saline works wonders). If not, then steaming her in a bathroom with a hot shower going is the next best thing.
Also, are you cleaning out her mouth and her nostril area(under her upper jaw)? This is important to get all of the thickened mucous that is clogging her nostrils. Small q-tips work well and a needle cap works well to hold their mouth open.
It is VERY important that a culture is done, and a better round of antibiotics is administered.. If not, well, you know what happens if not.
Oh, and what dose of Baytril is she getting? And what's the concentration of it? Is it 22.7mg/ml or 100mg/ml? They can have up to 10mg/kg for resistant bacteria, so if she's on a lower dose, then you can increase it. How much does she weigh?

Re: aLI HAS A MAJOR RI! PLEASE HELP Hurry hurry hurry!
No problem. I can always email/call my vet and see what her opinion would be. It's always good to get a second opinion.
Here's the short version of my blather, heh:
1. High temps/humidity(96/86 constantly, and 65-75% humidity)
2. Get another culture done, and while that is being done, put her on a higher dose of Baytril(you can go as high as 10mg/kg) every 24 hours.
3. Antibiotics need to be carried out for more than 2 weeks. At least a month to fully get rid of any nasties and prevent reinfection. If not, the bacteria will just get stronger, and the snake will succumb to the disease(aka drown).
4. Clean out her mouth and nares(nostrils on the underside of her top jaw) with q-tips. Saline in a 3-6cc syringe, with a 23-25gauge needle on it can be used as a high pressure wash to get the crud out. It really makes them feel better.
But anywho. Please get a vet appointment as soon as possible, she can't afford to get any worse. There's only so much I can do since she's not in my or my vet's care.

Becky, can I find baytril at a vet supplies store, or do I have to go through a vet to get it? It wouldnt hurt to have some in the house for back up.
Good luck with your snakes. I hope they get better!

I can probably tell you the answer to that.
You most likely will have to get it through your vet. They do NOT sell it anywhere you can get. ;]

Re: aLI HAS A MAJOR RI! PLEASE HELP Hurry hurry hurry!
Justin, it can only be obtained through a vet with a prescription. It's best to do a culture before starting an antibiotic regimen, because if the bacteria is resistant to the Baytril, then the animal will just get sicker, and the bacteria even more resistant.
It is a good antibiotic to have around though, in emergencies. I use it on my rats(usually newbies if they have stressed and are getting a myco flare up-rare here, but still). I'm using it right now in a 3.5 year old male rat who has some dental problems with a bottom incisor. Also has an abscess in his groin, most likely one of the glands down there abscessed. It's hell gettin' old

Re: aLI HAS A MAJOR RI! PLEASE HELP Hurry hurry hurry!
****Update**** I got a new doctor from the same vet office. The Avian And Exotic Animal Hospital. Dr. Jeffrey R. Jenkins, B.S, D.V.M.
http://drexotic.com/bio_jenkins.htm
He is a really nice guy and know so much more than the other stupid guy. He opened up both of the snakes mouthes with a popsicle stick and got a little "toothpick" looking thing, that had a flat and not sharp edge, and got inside the nasal cavity and pulled out a major chunk of snot. He gave me a months supply of Fortaz for both snakes (Ali, Sniper). He was really smart and seemed to know what he was talking about. I really think he did the trick, oh well we will see in a month. Thanks guys.
