ok so i have my probe taped down against the bottom of the tub and the temp is liike 96 but i have paper towel down so does that mean that the temp he feels is 96? or would it be a lil cooler?

Hi,

I hope you mean the tape is outside the enclosure not inside.

And the substrate can affect the temps so it is a good idea to measure the temps on the bottom of the enclosure as that is the highest he can get to ( make sure its not too hot) then adjust the substrate thickness to get the desired temps on the surface inside the hides.

I would aim for 94f max under the paper towel and 90-93 inside the warm end hide if you can.

This is where the digital thermometers with the probe are the easiest as the probs can be moved to those places easily.

The most important thing you have to do really is keep track of the temperatures with a good thermometer.

Same here. If that tape is inside the tub Get rid of it NOW. Even when you think there's no way they can get to it they will and it can do some bad damage. Tape is a big No-No inside enclosures. Instead, hold the probe wire in place with the hide itself. Yes, the snake can move it...but then you just have another excuse to get into their enclosure to put it back.

I, too, would aim for 94 on the bottom of the enclosure and 91-92 under the hide. Adjust the thickness of substrate until that difference is reached.

Just to add that low tack tape - like painters tape is considered ok as it it easy to remove without causing damage.

Alternative fixing methods include glue guns , weighing the probe down with cage furniture or, if the animal is not in the cage at the time, silicon which is fine once it has cured.

If the animal is in the tank don't use silicon though as the fumes could be bad.

ok well i took the tape out good thing i made a post it was only in there for a couple hours.... wats wrong with tape?

The problem with tape is that snakes are notorious for getting stuck in it and it is a horrid pain to get off of them once it is stuck.

not trying to be the thread bad guy here but i have tape in all my tubs and never had a problem with it getting stuck to my animals. i use the aluminium tape that we all use for flexwatt and that stuff sticks to the tub with such sticky force that even i have to work to take it off when it needs replacing.

i will agree though with everyone else that tape in the enclosure can be dangerous so dont do as i do, do what you need to...

I wholeheartedly hope you never ever have a problem with it in the future either.

I like to try and anticipate problems to avoid them rather than have to try and repair anything later if things go wrong.

I made a post once detailing some of the snake/tape problems we have seen on these boards - I stopped looking when I hit 17 ( if memory serves).

In this case, I have to agree with bigballs. I've used the aluminum tape for many different things and it does NOT come off, unlike duct tape, Scotch tape and masking tape. It will stay where you put it as long as you make sure it's pressed down well.

This said, I am still reluctant to use any tape in an enclosure on a permanent basis. Finding a different solution is always a better choice than using any type of tape.
