Anyone know anything about computers?
So I am pretty sure that my laptop has something wrong with it... When it gets turned on, it makes this humming sound like, similar to it reading a CD, even when there's no CD in there, and the noise is coming from the opposite side. It just started this yesterday I believe, and sounded kind of like a car switching gears, it would hum and get higher pitched, then stop and hum and start to get higher pitched again...
I'd appreciate any help if anyone knows about computers

Sounds like a fan issue. Try CAREFULLY taking the back cover off the laptop and using compressed air to blow any dust out. I may be overheating and thats not good! If its not the fan, then perhaps its the harddrive, which is a whole other issue.....

Sounds like your hard drive when it's heavily accessed. Are you running stuff (like a video file, etc) when this happens? Also, how old is the laptop?

Fans or hard drive. Sounds like the hard drive actually, might be that the drive has been damaged in some way from over processing, heat, moisture, banging....etc.
Anyways, whatever the problem is as long as you didn't cause it and you're under warranty, you can get it fixed up. If you aren't under warranty, check with the manufacturer anyways cause sometimes these things mess up and it's a well known issue that extends their warranty.

Re: Anyone know anything about computers?
Thanks for the help... It's probably the hard drive, the fans sound like they are working correctly now. I definitely leave the CPU on way too much.
I think it's like a 2 year old laptop, it's a HP pavilion dv5000, I thought it was a beast but I may be wrong
I was wanting a new computer anyway, a desktop instead, I will do some troubleshooting here in the next few days and see if I don't have to pay too much to get it fixed though.
Once again, thanks for the help everybody.

lol,my computer only gets shut down for updates.it does sound like your hard drive though.and it might have been the best 2 years ago.computers get outdated very fast.i would have that replaced so you dont lose all your stuff when it goes out.one question.is your hd close to being full?if so it has to work extra hard to sift through all the junk to get to wat you want to access.

Re: Anyone know anything about computers?
The was almost 2/3 of the way full, it's not reaching its limit though, I just went through and cleaned some stuff up, I'm hoping it helps keep it running longer.
I started backing up the documents I would probably need, music/homework onto some CD's so I'm hoping that gets done before my computer poops out.
How much money would it cost to get a hard drive replaced? anyone have any idea? would it cost as much as a decent computer?

Once you get everything backed up and cleaned up, run a defragmentation utility on it. You may find you don't need a new one.
