Power Loss
After a big storm last night, we lost at about 1:30 A.M. and you guessed it, I have no generator. I was up all night monitoring my incubators temps. This morning at 6:00 A.M., we decided to move the incubator with the eggs inside, to keep and spare heat, into my SUV to go to a friends house and borrow her power. We'll after carrying a 55gal cooler filled with water bottles and snake eggs up a flight of stairs and into the back of the car, the power clicks on. I was so happy. We moved the bator back and temps never dropped lower than 81.
Biggest scare of my life.

Re: Power Loss
I feel your pain brother. I had the exact thing happen to me about a month ago after moving into a new place. I had just moved to a house from an apartment (we had a one month overlap in lease between the apartment and house which turned out to be good). Anyway...I awoke one morning at 5am and noticed silence, I have to have some sort of noise on in the background to sleep, and I use a fan most of the time. Well my fan wasnt on and jumped out of my bed right away and yelled 'sh!t'....my eggs were the first thing i thought about...so i ran downstairs where I too have a cooler incubator. The temp was down to 83.5 and the eggs were only 10 days old...I grabbed the incubator and drove accross town to our empty apartment which we still had access to....so I got to the apartment and got everything set up there. The aggravating part was when I got back home to our house....the power was back on.
The eggs are on day 36 and candled okay so far...there are a few dimples which in the past have not meant much....but still, a scary incident....like I said man, I know exactly what you just went thru....here's to a happy healthy clutch for you!

Good Call...I would like to get a generator by next season but the cost for a nice one... ...but you get what you pay for right?
Do you have a link or the name of a battery backup you recommend?

Re: Power Loss
I have a power adapter for the car that we use to run DVD players, charge games and laptops for roadtrips. I found it in the game section at ToysRUs. I figure if I have an outage I'll just use the car to keep the heat going....

My whole thing with the car solution is.....is a car really the safest place to go for your eggs, or yourself, during a storm that would cause a power outage? I was raised in Kansas and have seen my share of blown out car windows from microburst....

I wouldn't move during a storm. I'm using a marine cooler for my incubator and it holds the heat real well. I wouldn't need to move it unless we had a power outage for more than 10-12 hours.

Re: Power Loss
The one I use is made for computer servers... I'm not a big computer guy but my brother tells me with the small amount of energy needed to power a heat pad it should last a couple days(I'm running 17 - 11'' heat pads)... They are made by American Power Conversion and if you cant get ahold of anything and you're really interested send me a PM and I can get one through work. They are a little pricey so its up to you to decide if its worth the $$... My brother was given a sample and gave it to me for free so to me it was worth freehundred dollars Below is the link to one that kinda looks like mine. I can tell you exact model when I get outta work.
