A family friend found this snake in their yard, and called me since they knew I kept snakes. They also said it was "spitting" on them, maybe musk? I have no idea what this could be, since im more into BPs and Boas

I second that! Its a common Garter I believe!

They are being musked by the way. It really stinks, and its hard to just wash off. Tell them to wash their hands in lemon juice or white distilled vinegar if its on their hands. If its on their clothes, pour a cup of white vinegar in the washer with them!!

I think that might be what's called a Butler's Garter. Not 100% on it though.

I didn't know their range extended to Kansas.

It appears to be a common garter.

Re: What kind of snake is this?

    good to know.

Now I need to find something to do with it. Im thinking about releasing it at a little park behind my school that has a small pond with an abundance of small frogs and near a wooded area.
