Here's what I know. Ball pythons do not like lots of room. It isn't at all natural for them. They are usually found in termite mounds and old rodent burrows in the wild. They like to have "stuff" all around them with just enough room to move, but no extra. Very rarely are they out and about moving around.
I don't understand the mentality of a snake, but I do know from my own experiences that one thing I had to keep correcting was my belief they needed room to roam. Once I finally realized that everyone else was right they settled right in.
So long story short they don't need nearly as much room as you might think they do. Sure, they could stretch out more, but chances are they won't. In fact they'll probably be hiding out in the smallest hide they can fit into except when they slither to the otherside to thermoregulate their temps.
