Thinking about going back to aspen
I am currently using coconut substrate and I am thinking about going back to aspen like I had it before. I think aspen is a bit cleaner, but I couldn't get the right humidity level with it. I have changed the cage some and I am thinking I could get the level right now that I covered the whole top except for the lighting area.
I will try it either this weekend or next weekend, but do I have anything to worry about by switching substrates?

Re: Thinking about going back to aspen
As far as I know, it shouldnt be a problem. I use aspen right now, but may be switching to paper. I probably will not switch entirely until i get a tstat, but I am putting paper down for feeding day right now, since last feed Pandora took a mouthful of aspen. The cheapest aspen I have found is from Tractor Supply.

Re: Thinking about going back to aspen
You could use cypress mulch. I started out using aspen but it was too dry and had a hard time getting the humidity up. So I switched over to cypress mulch which is very much like aspen but holds humidity better. I also like cypress mulch because it is darker in color than aspen which gives the tank more of a tropical feel. The only problem I have with cypress mulch is that it is slightly more expensive than aspen but not really enough to make a difference in my opinion.

What is the humidity with each substrate? What size water bowl? Tub or tank? UTH or overhead heat. All this is a factor.

I am guessing that you are using a tank....
When I had my older girl in a tank I really liked Cypress Mulch like Ringo had suggested. I too feel that Aspen is a bit too dry for a tank, at least I never had any luck with it myself. I could never get the humidity to stay at the proper level, even with covering the tank lid, not using a light, misting, etc. If you are having problems with low humidity, I would definitely give Cypress a try.
I do like aspen in my tubs though!!

ok, so im going to go buy a couple bags of this in a few days, but my only concern is that i will have some wack alergy(sp) to the cypress... because my sinuses go crazy whenever i am around aspen to much... as well as when my snakes poo... but what are my chances of this happening with cypress as well?
