What I lost for my birthday

So...the night before my birthday, I had set my snake Basilica's tub (it has locks) outside since it was nice out (82F) in the shade, because either her heating element wasn't getting as warm as I liked or her thermometer was broken, and I didn't want her being cold. My plan was to pick up a new thermometer and heating element on the way to work (which I did) and install it when I got home. I returned home to find her tub in the garage, because my mom wanted her in--and that was fine. But mom had held Basilica and then put her back in, and when she put her back in, she didn't latch the lid on properly, so...by the time I got there, no snake.

We searched the garage, but TWO garage doors had been open the entire time. I put her hide out there and left her new heat element on in the hopes she'd go back somewhere safe and warm and familiar, and then put a cage with a rat out there hoping she'd be hungry...but no such luck. It's still out there and...well...I think she got outside.

If so, I guess I'll just...I don't know. It upsets me. I hope I end up finding her but to be realistic I'll probably never see her again. Ugh, it was so stupid of me to have even put her out...but I didn't want to put her in with one of the other snakes, for fear of stress and competition and such. I was just worried about leaving her, since my mom keeps the house about 69F.

Sorry for the depressing story, everyone. Wish me luck at finding her.

You should make your mom pay for a new snake. She shouldn't have touched it if she didn't have to.

If she doesn't, take her cat or dog and drop them off in the country somewhere.

Look, I'm upset about the loss of the snake but I'm not vindictive. She didn't mean to lose her, and she was just trying to help, because she was worried about Basilica getting too hot. She likes my snakes, and I don't mind if she holds them. The snake in question cost me a grand total of $35, alright---but it's not the money, and I don't want a replacement. It's the loss of a valued and loved pet that bothers me, not the loss of a 'collection piece' or monetary investment. As for getting petty revenge---No. I love the cats and dogs as much as I love my snakes, and I would NEVER abandon an animal like that. It sickens me that someone would even suggest such a thing.

Re: What I lost for my birthday

I'm really sorry to hear that. I had something similiar happen with my first BP, Kain. His cage was next to the door that led out to the shed in our old house, and one day I forgot to latch his cage back, and by a stroke of extra bad luck, the door was also cracked open. So out he went. You might try doing what I did, if you're friendly with your neighbors at all - I took a picture of him and knocked on a couple of doors, told them what had happened, and that if they saw him, to come and knock on my door. I didn't want someone taking after him with a shovel or anything out of ignorance. But I lived in a very friendly neighborhood, my neighbors knew I had snakes and were ok with it. Yours might be different. Is there any way she could have gotten underneath your house? Have you checked all the water heater pipes, behind the washing machine-anywhere warm in the garage. Odds are she took to the first dark, warm place she found. Good luck!

Yeah, we searched under the water heater, the washers and dryers, the heating unit, the cars, the freezer--we couldn't find her. It was warm that day, so she probably went out of the garage door, which was about six feet from where her tub was sitting. But thanks for the advice---I might have to try the picture idea!
