Rats being adopted as pets

Just saw this today - this lady got infested with rats after she had purchased some to feed her snakes - seems that the snakes were still neglected though:

Wow... that's sad on many different levels. I fell bad for the ratties, the snakes, the lady, the whole mess.....

on a more serious note, i feel so bad for this person's snakes, and all her animals for that matter. people should not own animals they cant or wont take care of.

the rats I had when I was younger were so silly, we raised them from pups so they were the sweetest! I just thought it was funny how she said it, I dont know.

Yeah.... its like when I watch those animal cop shows on Animal Planet, they make me so mad I have to turn them off!

Something like this just happened to a guy over on Kingsnake. I'm still unsure about the whole thing, but he had 2 snakes... (I watched this unfold over a couple of weeks,) last week he finally told us that he in fact only had 2 snakes, and he had a little over a hundred rats taken from him and gassed.

I didn't want to say it sounded like hoarding, but he pretty much said that is what he is being accused of.

I wasn't sure about he whole story about his circumstances, but he has made it clear at the end he had 2 wild caught snakes, a garter and gopher snake, and his live and frozen rats were being taken from him, counting for about 100 live rats, put down and now he is left with 14 adult rats.

People do do this, and it's sad when any animal has to live in those conditions.

I hear ya! Ratties make great pets, probably not 100 or so loose ones.... But they do!

Rats are kinda like small dogs. I know that my rats that have "pet status" are very hand tame and love attention. The two young ones I'm growing up to be breeders, get all excited when I come into the room and they sit up on their hind legs and wait for me to open their cage so they can come out and get attention. Its so cute.

I feel bad for the lady though. Some people just should not own certain types of pets.

That's so sad to hear about Connie... I think hoarding really is a sickness. When you see these people getting 90 cats, or I saw a man that had 110 plus birds loose in his home....or they get 110 rats removed from their homes, they honestlly love their animals.... but I don't think they realize that their critters are not being cared for properly. Even if that's the owner's intention... I just don't see a 80 yr old woman putting flea treatment on 75 cats alone... Or crating them to get their shots, etc...
Makes me sad.

A few weeks ago a prego female chewed out of a tub.... After no luck "catching" her I had to put down some bait. I felt so horrible, but I've seen what a rat problem can do-there was a pet store that had a colony of feeder ratties living in the walls, floors, etc... and I really don't want to piss off any neighbors.....So that was that. I kept thinking, 20 babies... that's 21 ratties that would be loose here.... just a bad situation all round...

My rats act like rats should, but they do enjoy human companionship. They love to hang out with us, but I have to disagree on the small dog part.
My rats are spoiled and know that we humans mean some nice tummy scratches, or treats, or just attention.
If that's what people mean by like small dogs... then I can understand.
