Ring worm sucks!!!!

When my dog got it, I tried the creams but they didnt work so I took her to the vet. The gave her ORAL clotrimazole along with the OTC cream. Get rid of it from the outside in. There are a few other oral antifungals available also. If you do go this route, I'd definitely suggest getting a prescription from the vet to take to your pharmacy. I paid $70 for my dog's pills through the vet's office only to get to work (at a pharmacy) and find out that I could've gotten it for at least half that!

But the pills really did help it to clear up a lot faster! Hope this helps!

EDIT: The pills taste like crap so I had to rotate between hiding them in peanut butter, bread, or vienna sausages. She's catch on to one trick so I'd have to switch it up a lil bit. She's too smart for her own good!

Well, we had our vet check up last night, and most everything is going well. Our cat no longer has coccidia, got his final FIV shot, but he still has a partially bald spot on his ear.

She said that it may not have glowed fluorescent under the wood's lamp because of the type of fungus it is. She didn't feel like it was out of control, but gave us a shampoo and wipes to treat the cat with and gave us strict orders to clean the :cens0r::cens0r::cens0r::cens0r: out of everything in the house.

Unfortunately, everything I have read about the prescription meds for cats is that they can have some really adverse reactions and a lot of the time they don't get rid of the fungus.

We will see, I'm pretty certain that it's just me and chris tossing it back and forth. He's going to the doctor tonight to get a prescription for some oral meds for us. Hopefully this will be the end of it!!

Aw crap; sorry that you have to deal with that. My best friend had it years ago, and she was miserable If it makes you feel any better (this is embarassing) I am plagued with athlete's foot. Not sure if it is similar.. it is just between two of my toes. I treat it, it goes, then it returns. Husband has none. Sigh.. sorry for the fungal sufferings.

I believe athlete's foot is different (but I'm no doctor), at least in the symptoms, athlete's foot is uber-itchy. My ringworm never itched, however, although I have been told some people get itchyness.

Yes. Ring worm and athletes foot and jock itch are all the same things. There are different names for where on the body ring worm is found, and I believe there is a difference in how they are passed from area to area. I believe ring worm of the body. Tinea corpus, cannot be passed to the scalp or nails or feet. I also think that athletes foot cannot be passed to the body. The type of fungus can be different... I'm not a doctor either

Now, this could be all horribly wrong, but I think I remember reading about it when I was trying to figure out what the heck I had the first time I ever got ring worm (last summer).

A reason your athletes foot may come back is because your wearing the same shoes where the spores are. Those spores are incredibly hardy, and reinfection can very well continue.

Have you considered anti-fungal pills? They are said to work within 2 weeks, and do have some residual effect.

I don't know, that's just all what I read online. My ring worm only really drove me nuts when it was on my palm, that's why it busted open, pussed up and got infected. Because I don't care if it's going to get infected... it itches dammit.

So far, we gave our cat a shampooing. The main ingredients are Miconazole and chlorhexidine gluconate, then she gave us Pledget wipes (chlorhexidine gluconate) to use on him twice a day.

She told me to clean anything I have ever touched and to sterilize all of our laundry. (Lucky for me I have a Miele washer, which I have burned myself on) Cat was pretty good with the scrub, we put him in the snake room to dry lol. Wet cats are funny.

Sounds interesting! I am glad that right now, I am symptom-free. I actually got a new pair of sneakers (heck, it was a good excuse to do so..) and I got all new socks. I have been using the Lotrimin powder spray, and it works great. Now I have also tossed out my old sneakers.. so I am starting anew.. The sneakers that i got "breathe" better I think; they have no leather or pleather. Just a mesh-type fabric with a rubbery frame.

LamisilAT I had ringworm under my chin from my cat playing in the dirt. It took about a week to go away, itches like crazy! But that's what I used and it cleared it right up.

Haha! This thread isn't that old! Well, I suppose I can update.

Both Chris the cat and I had ringworm after the last post. Mine cleared up pretty quickly, but Chris got some on the palms of his hands, in between the fingers and started to spread onto the fingers themselves. He started using the cats medication wipes, since the cat only needed a few more days of treatment. Then he kept on using the Lotrimin.

Well, both the cat and I were clear of ringworm, but Chris still had to mess with it for weeks with the lotrimin and wipes. Finally it cleared up.

Well, starting 2 weeks ago, Chris's ringworm came back on his palm, right where he had it before. He didn't continue to treat it after it was "clear" so it flared up again. He's currently dealing with it, but this time he's using bleach soaks and lotrimin. It seems to be working really well, but he needs to do it for a month after it's cleared in my opinion.

I figure for as much as we've spent in cream, he could have just gone to the doctor and gotten anti-fungal pills. :/
