Mice per Tub and MI Rodent Breeder

    Hey everyone,

After figuring that breeding is not the best option for me now, I am looking to find a cheap place to buy live adult mouse feeders, or possibly rats. I attend MSU, but the semester ends next week, after which I move back home to Calhoun County. I will most likely be working in Lansing over the summer, as well as when I return to MSU in August. To cut costs, I want to find a good, but cheap, source of feeders. This being said, I thought a breeder would be cheapest, as the feeders at the reptishows are right around 50 cents each, rather than 2+ dollars at a petstore. Around Lansing would probably work out best, but any MI feeder suppliers please feel free to post. I am looking for live feeders, no f/t please(yet at least). The snake I will have is on 1 adult mouse a week right now, but could probably take 2 pretty soon. Mice may be easier since they wont grow too big to be fed, but rats will be considered too.

And, one last question. I know not to have more than one adult male in the same enclosure, but how many mice can be held in one tub( not sure on size or dimensions, so if you know a specific dimension or tub size, and how many mice can be in it, let me know)

    Thanks a lot
    Austin

Go to Home Depot and get some of those black cement mixing tubs. Make some lids out of 1 x 2's and the 1/4" wire mesh. Make it fit to where the mesh sits on the rim of the tub and the wood overhangs. This ensures that the mice won't chew out. I successfully keep between 60-75 adult mice in those on a temporary basis. As long as they have plenty of food and water, and are changed out often, they do fine.

I generally keep all males in one tub and all females plus 2-4 males in another tub. Males won't fight if there are ALOT in a cage. If there are only 2-3, they will fight and stink up the place.

Also, when changing the cage, don't use a disinfectant when wiping it out. This will remove their scent and will make them urinate up a storm to re-scent it. Everything will stink. Just wipe it out, put new bedding in and put mice back in. Works well for me and they don't stink.

I think your best bet is going to be going to a show like Taylor and talking with the feeder breeders there. They most likely will know the others around, and may be able to let you know someone close by.

I have a boa friend of mine in lansing you can contact him trough his web page at bbcexotics.com. He is going to be hopefully opening a pet store on penn soon. I would hope he will be able to help you out. He may know of some local breeders. I know he is trying to get suppliers right now so he may have some new contacts in the lansing area.

I sent him an email right when I posted back, but no response yet
Also, littleindiangirl, I saw that you are the one that recomended the vet in Williamston, MI. Would that mean you are in the Lansing area? I am going to MSU right now, just curious about other herp people in the area, if you are around here, where do you get your feeders, or do you breed your own? Thanks

Re: Mice per Tub and MI Rodent Breeder

I breed all my own feeders. Regular and just got some ASF in. I used to live about an hour away from williamston, and the Vet was excellent. Although I wish he were closer.

I now live up in the tri-city area. Work in Midland, live in Bay City, shop in Saginaw. So he is farther for me now then ever, but it isn't a big deal.

We do drive around the state pretty often to shows and pet shops, but if you ever need anything, I'm definitely just a click away.

Thanks for the offer. I'll let you know if the job at Preuss works out, if so, if you are ever by feel free to ask for me, Austin.
