Thinking about moving over to tubs
Hi everyone , i currently own a ball python i had him for about 7 months now and i realy like having ball pythons but he's currently in a glass tank , i was thinking about getting another one but dont want to buy another tank with lamp + UTH ect ect
so i was maybe thinking about just buying 2 tubs , would be cheaper but i have some questions ... even with tubs do you guys put UTH ? and what about the heat lamp? subtrate?
it's either this or i was maybe thinking about just building a big tank and dividing it into 2

Lamps tend to dry out the air and your snake. I use flexwatt belly-heat in my racks.
There are a bunch of places you can buy a rack, or you could build one yourself.

ok so first thing how big is your python and how big is it's cage. Then i can give more info. As for the heating in tubs, hang the lamp from somthing, if your can't find anything to hang it from, put a small hook in the ceiling and hang it from there. I personally like glass tanks and the only thing i would reccomend tubs for a babys because tubs can be not so see through and they scare really easily and it feels a little more secure to them.

Re: Thinking about moving over to tubs
hi thanks for the replys , my ball python isnt that big yet he's still a baby he's only 9 months old ... i was realy thinking about just making a tank and dividing it in 2 , like making it from fiberglass and the top from metal screening i draw it on paper and it looks pretty good and doesnt look like it would cost much !
but any help would be greatly appreciated
i kinda wanna make it like this guy did here
http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/s...ad.php?t=64254
but instead of wood make it with fiber glass and to be able to open it from the side instead of the top but would look something like this

15-32qt tub, undertank heater, digital thermometer, 2 hides, water bowl, bungee cord to hold on lid(in the center), newspaper or aspen for bedding, small soldering iron to poke some holes in the sides, thermostat to control undertank heater. ALL you need to set up your snake and make him feel secure and happy in his home.
Tanks are for fish.. They are heavy, fragile, expensive, very hard to heat and keep humidified, don't make the snake feel secure, and will require ALOT of work and money to properly set one up. Just get a tub and take your snake out when you want to see him. Most tubs nowadays are very clear and you can easily see the snake. You want a tub that is low to the ground(6" or so) but has a good amount of floor space.
When your snake gets bigger, you can get a plastic enclosure specifically made for reptiles. Boaphile, Animal Plastics, Herpenclosures, RBI Plastics, etc. all have great looking, glass-front cages that actually look nice and will keep your snake happy and healthy.
To me, tanks just look trashy, especially since you have to insulate them and do so much work to them to make it work for the snake(Ball Pythons at least). I don't even keep my 8ft boa in a tank. She's in a VE-175 tub from Reptile Tubs and it's so easy to clean and heat. The only animals in tanks are my african clawed frog(who is aquatic), my tropical fish, my Leopard Gecko, my Crested Gecko(she's in an Exo-Terra) and soon to be my White's Tree Frog. Even the 3 Box Turtles are in a tub because not seeing a barrier can cause nose-rub and stress.
If you must keep him in a tank, go get a 10-gallon and and make a top out of plexiglas. It will keep the humidity and heat in.

Re: Thinking about moving over to tubs
id never put a baby in anything smaller than a 20gal if I was going with a glass tank... i dont think theres enough room to have 2 hides and a water dish in a 10 gal... If your going with a plastic tub I go with a 66qt snap-top from walmart/lowes or something... its like 10$ and pretty much the same size as a 20gal tank... Holds heat/humidity very well and actualy gives your snake room to move around. check out my gallery for some pics of my set ups.

Re: Thinking about moving over to tubs
i am currently leaning on just building a tank , but i need to know what material i should make it with , plexiglass all arround? or just wood and plexiglass in the front? also if i do make the tank of plexiglass and put the UTH it won't just burn through it or anything right? thanks for all the replys

Re: Thinking about moving over to tubs
Not sure what size cage you wanna make but there are pics of my 4x2x1.5ft cage I built in my gallery... We made these out of cabinet grade plywood from homedepot with a plexiglass front. I put the flexwatt inside the cage and covered the bottom with a thin layer of vinyl... bought a big roll from home depot for like 20$ and its enough to make probably 8 of these cages. If you need any details feel free to shoot me an PM.

Exactly. I spent more on an enclosure for two BP's than my four slot 32 quart rack from Rich at Reptilebasics. And as long as you're getting two...I'd plan ahead...two turns into four pretty quick.
