Re: Snakes and Rodents in same room ?

I don't see much of a problem with it besides perhaps some snakes will be on "feed mode" all the time which may result in bites. Every so often I would end up having a keeper rat and it would be in the same room as the snakes. Personaly, I would want them apart if I could

What's your favorite food? Well, I don't know, but let's go with mine: prime rib.

Imagine trying to get your job done, or get some studying done, when you haven't eaten for the better part of a week and there is a juicy prime rib sitting across the room staring at you.....

    Seems kinda mean.

I wouldn't do that . As a matter of fact I'd never keep live rats inside the house because they stinnk. I keep some rats in my garden sched

That's disgusting.. What if some wild rodents who had gotten into poison came into contact with those rats and your snake ingested that poison?? Or what if they ate a bug that came in contact with something toxic? What if they were carrying snake-specific parasites and passed them on to the rats you feed your snake? How can you humanely keep a hot-blooded animal that requires temperatures below 70-72 and low humidity, in a garden shed that doesn't have air conditioning?

Have some respect for the animals that keep your snake alive...

I agree! Also, what on earth were you feeding them to make them stink??? Rats are one of the cleanest rodents out there...as long as you don't neglect cleaning or they aren't crammed too many into too small an enclosure.

These aren't just 'rodents'..these are the food items for your snakes. Even if you only have normals, they are still valuable enough for you to take good care of their food source as well.

I have been experimenting around here lately and I got completely opposite results.

I noticed my balls feeding responses were going down and the only thing that had changed was I started breeding rats. I put two and two together and moved them into a completely different room and the difference was astounding. The responses are back up and I have no doubt that was the reason.

This isn't a Harvard study my any means, but just something small I did and had better results with.

Re: Snakes and Rodents in same room ?

seeing that room is a massive issue with only 1300 sq ft under the roof and 3 bedrooms. We keep 3 colonies of soft furs and 10 bins for mice. it was funny when we first started breeding our little project ball got out and was sitting on the top of our first soft fur group. We have experienced no feeding problems either way. our finicky eaters do however seem to feed better in that room. I would however suggest if you do keep rodents in the house use equine absorbent bedding available at most farm and fleet stores as your bedding. when we switched over to that from pine bedding the smell went down dramatically. you still have to keep on top of the cleaning but it is about the same price. 50 lbs is about 4 to 5 dollars. when they wet on it it will turn into saw dust. It is just compressed wood pulp.
