Building new cage, questions
My question is this-we want to put in dividers so that we can expand or shrink the cages as need be, due to growth, breeding, new snake, ect.
I was thinking of using plexi for the dividers, but will it stress my snakes to be able to see the other snakes right next to them? Should I use something non-see through?
Also is there anything I can use to seal it besides polyurethane, because we don't have a garage or anything where it could sit to air out for two weeks...just a back patio which isn't covered, so if it rains or anything, the cage would get wet. We could put it out there for a day or two if the weather was nice but this is south texas and the weather tends to fluctuate a lot.
Help?

Re: Building new cage, questions
I think the snakes should be okay with clear dividers... and if you have some that are extra shy, I would make sure to fill their enclosure with hiding places. I use silicone for glass... not sure how well it works with plexi.

My few suggestions:
Paint the dividers...You can buy a plastic/glass base coat (spray paints on so the real paint won't peel) then paint the dividers...then no issues.
You can use thick visqueen or contact paper to seal the inside of the cage instead of spraying polyurathane...works just as well and you can get creative with the walls.
Hope this helps,

Re: Building new cage, questions
for a divider, why not peices of wood that slide snug into place, and can be moved easily, and maybe sets of predrilled holes in 6-12" incraments or so to screw the divider into place without making it perminant. Maybe find some expanded PVC as a divider, its light and not seethrough.
As for coating it, I know there is a milk based product or something, but i dont know. You could just use Melamine, or put formica laminant on the wood then caulk the corners and you have a nice sealed, moisture resistant, decent looking enclosure.
Silicone works good with plexi, ive used it with acrylic (generic plexi), and stuck well almost instantly and is still holding extremly strong in a spot that is freestanding (on a wall with no bottems or sides).
