One use of the term backyard breeder is to describe someone who breeds dogs without regard to the genetics of the dogs involved. A real breeder is supposed to always be striving to better the breed. Someone who just regularly cranks dogs out for profit is better described as a puppy mill. In all fairness a big time dog breeder will describe someone who occasionally breeds a litter of puppies as a hobby using top quality breeding stock but selling at 1/3 the price of the breeder as a backyard breeder.
