Re: best time to buy
Hi,
If they are bad at customer service before the sale, wait till after... i would avoid that!
Best time will be coming up soon. When females have laid their eggs and breeders are replacing them with something else. I would suggest getting an animal in the 800- 1100 gram range though since most people only sell adult breeders if they have low egg production (4-5 eggs on a big female) or something wrong. You may get lucky and find someone getting out of breeding...?
Ask a LOT of questions before you buy.
1.Age (important! you dont want an overfeed yearling)
2.Feeding
3.Egg production (if proven)
4.What were they breed to last (they can retain sperm)
etc...
Good luck!
Jon

Re: best time to buy
I would say that you would have to expect that someone selling a female of breeding size would be asking a higher price during breeding season than later in the year. There are plenty of people selling nice snakes that provide good communication and customer service. There is no need to buy from anyone that that you don't have a good response from or don't feel right about. www.faunaclassifieds.com provides a Board of Inquiry where you can do a search of a seller to get an indication of his past dealings with other people.

Clayton, if he seems sketchy (he may well not be), if your gut is telling you to walk away, if his customer service isn't what you expect it to be....and this is only in the purchasing phase....then trust yourself. It may take you awhile to find the right snake from the right person but it's never time wasted in my mind.
Like Jon said, ask specific questions and expect clear, concise answers. Be a smart, informed buyer. It won't quarantee you'll never be ripped off but it lessens the odds somewhat.
Also we have an Inquiries section here at BPNet. You can post inquiries about breeders, etc. there to get the opinions of members that have had dealings with that person.
