It is safest to assume your snake will burrow at some point and avoid any possible problems rather than just assume it will never do it.

Agreed, but I found this to be impossible. For me, the temp on the glass would be much higher than 92-95 in order to get the temp inside the hide to 90-93. I have switched to the cage carpet for now. I know it is not a very popular substrate, but but so far so good with the temps. IMO it looks a lot better than newspaper or paper towels too.

Re: Temp on substrate vs Temp on glass

I just got my Herpstat II and it is adjusted to 95. The temperature inside where the substrate is is 91-92. I also have a sheet of newspaper under the substrate.

Re: Temp on substrate vs Temp on glass

I make sure the temp on the bottom of the tub is 90-94 under the hot hide. He always burrows down even if the substrate is 94°, so this works best for me to ensure the right temperature for the wee man. Cheers

You were clear enough. And I'm saying that your snake is going to go to the hot spot, which is down below, so THAT needs to be 92.

I lost my snake for a couple of days under the substrate. I only found where he was because I could see tunnels in it.

So out of curiosity, what is the temp on top of your warm side substrate? Also what do you use and what is the thickness?

I have switched to Kraft paper with a dusting of aspen shavings on top to help retain some humidity. This is the only way I could think of to know the exact temp that he is on without burrowing.

Don't put too much substrate. Instead what I did was put 1 layer of newspaper, another layer of paper towels and then a layer of substrate.
