Re: Thinking about a big lizard.

Female Chinese Water Dragons are semi big without being huge. 3ft with most of it being there tail. Not nearly as big as any monitors or igs or tegus but much easier to care for and usually more docile. Or you could possibly go with an Australian Water Dragon. Pretty similar, some differences in husbandry but in my opinion, look better than AWDs
In the end, we will all die alone

I would definately go for the tegu, I just got my own, they don't get too too big but if socialized properly they are great animals. Check out this video by Rick Sisco of Sisco Reptiles.

That Tegu video is possibly the cutest thing I've ever seen. Lol, now you got me wanting one. What types of Tegus are those out of curiosity?

Re: Thinking about a big lizard.

That tegu video is awesome! I want a tegu now~! I dont know how well a Water Monitor will do in an apartmemt...just cleaning the monitors enclosure using the minimalist amenities that an apartment offers could prove to be a headache.

But if I were to get a 'large' lizard I think I too would look into Cyclura....I have seen some big ol rhinos that were essentially the family dog...

    Goodluck~!

PS. Did I mention that-that monitor clip is awesome!?

Re: Thinking about a big lizard.

I hate to see people try to make dogs out of reptiles......sad sad stuff.

If you are looking to get into monitor lizards, I would suggest ackies or blackheads as a starting point. If those are too small for you, sand monitors are interesting captives and are quite beautiful. Monitors are not like snakes.....a bad bite from an adult water monitor could cost you some fingers...Once I was 'gotten good' by an adult ackie, I have never had the urge to keep any monitor larger than 3-4' ....something about teeth hitting bone just makes me fear those big guys.

Blue trees and Green trees require very specific care and need to be kept by advanced keepers only. Sadly most people buy them because they are 'pretty' and they die due to inappropriate care. Blue trees come from a little island near New Guinea.....one little island is the only place they can be found....it is sad to see such a rare reptile abused so much by people trying to make money.

If you really want a water monitor, I would suggest getting a CBB baby. You will have much better luck if you stay away from imports. I would advise against it though.

Re: Thinking about a big lizard.

As previously mentioned bro, an argintine black and white, or blue would be good.

Columbians, for the most part are not as good of "pets" but are generally, not as bad as the reputation, they have either.

with some experience it seems, however not much I will tell you this right now, getting a red tegu, may end up being a PITA with the skin problems, they have.

Re: Thinking about a big lizard.

If you like large lizards, I might recommend a Rhacodactylus Leachianus gecko. They are the largest geckos in the world, and they vocalize with chirps, growls, whimpers, whistles, etc. Very neat lizards! I totally want to get one. They also look very prehistoric, which I think is just awesome.
This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.
