    Hey.. Eastern hognose!!

Hey, turns out I got an EASTERN hognose, not a western one! Are there any different care sheets out the for the eastern hognose snake? Any major differences?

Heres a picture of the little guy.. He seems to be pretty mellow, I did see the "cobra" thing they do though, kind of cute

Not much difference westerns tolerate a bit more arid environment. Also it has been said that easterns are harder to get eating rodents. So long as your snake will eat for you there ain't much to worry about.

    Re: Hey.. Eastern hognose!!

Hey thanks a bunch! The breeder had told me that they needed a little more humidity than the western, and that he pre-scents his food for them with a frozen toad he has and that works well.

He also said I could use canned salmon for the pre-scenting, would this work? Or does someone have other suggestions?

And any idea on the percent of humidity the snake should have in the enclosure?

The juice from canned tuna will work good for scenting (packed in water not the one in oil).

    Re: Hey.. Eastern hognose!!

Edie. I was using canned salmon with him for the last month or so. I switched from the toads, he has also taken a tuna scented pink. I didn't know you had all that fish in your freezer !!! How about some more boas for frozen fish? LOL. Here is a picture of your new hognose eating a scented f/t pink.

here is the mother, she is a WC melanistic Eastern. She feeds on toads exclusively but I tie a mouse to the back of the toads legs. They do not gain very much weight on a toad strict diet.

If you have ANY trouble with him or questions please call or email me.

Oh and I'm sure after his next fishing trip I can get you all the salmon you would want! He gets so much, he gets everything my mom catches as well.. and ends up giving most of it away! They get canned salmon, and salmon steaks or something.. I don't eat any fish/meat so I don't know what they call things.. we always have tons of stuff though.. Deer meat too!

If you have that much, you should definately try smoking it some time (not with rolling papers, with a smoker)... It's delicious!!! (My Dad also spends about 4 months of the year fresh water Salmon fishing at the summer place)

Someone else can! I haven't touched fish in 10 years and meat in 5! The only meat I come in contact with are f/t rats and mice

My step-dad might smoke some of the meat he has, I don't really know what he does with it, I just find it everywhere!
