My ball has been soaking alot lately. I looked in the water and saw a few dead mites. I can not find any pam where I live what else could I use to get rid of these mites?

Re: mites
You can order Provent-a-Mite online from quite a few places. The Bean Farm has it, along with Pro Products.
Though you can try some of the other products out there, I feel you'd be better off ordering a can of P.A.M. and taking care of them once and for all than messing around with other stuff that only kinda works.

are the mites similar to fleas on a dog or are they more serious?

Re: mites
more serious, these ones can have infections and diseases and the longer you have a problem the more likely your snake is going to be infected

They're similar in that they're blood sucking little leeches. But they have more in common with mites on birds and rodents.
They are most definitely serious. If left untreated, they can eventually kill your snake. You need to get rid of them. Provent-a-Mite is the absolute best solution. The gunk you get at the pet stores won't do the job. As mentioned in another post, you can order PAM online. In the meantime, soak the snake in luke-warm water (about the same temp as the cage - around 85 to 90 degrees). While the snake is soaking, THOROUGHLY clean the cage with a mild bleach solution and rinse thoroughly. Soak water bowls, hides etc in mild bleach solution as well. Wooden fixtures should be rinsed thoroughly and then baked at low heat in the oven or simply microwaved. If you're using aspen chips or other wood (or shredded paper) substrate, I'd suggest switching to paper towels or newspaper until you get rid of the mites.

Re: mites
Jeez, you can even buy PAM through Amazon.com these days...! Buy 1 can and then buy an extra for your emergency snake kit!

Re: mites
I'm using PaM and ivomec to get rid of mine. They're a pain in the arse and PaM doesn't always work on the first shot.

If the infestation is severe it might require more than one application however in most cases you will only need to treat the enclosure once.
