power outage/weather problem/ what to do

Were currently having a statewide problem with power right now, thankfully we personally still have power and internet. thousands of people are without power, schools are locked down, exc.

what do you do with your reptiles in the event of a power outage? I have three different species that rely on heat to thrive. this will also be an issue come hurricane season also. what do you do with the animals? In the event of a hurricane (or natural disasters) do you put your animals in snake bags and take them with you or do you leave them home and hope for the best.

I would never leave anything living "alone and hope for the best." You're such a goof Ashley!! You have instant warmers of varying hour lengths. Put them into a tube sock and put it into a tub along with several snakes in their snake bags. Don't have warmers? Go get some so that the emergency does not become a crisis! My 2 cents....

I'd say that a good idea would be to have large hand warmer packs on hand. You can put them in a container or your snakes enclosure if it's not too large. You can get them in sizes that last up to 60 hours or so. It's a good idea to wrap them up in something like a sock or small towel as they get to about 115 degrees. Some people also use kerosene or gas powered generator or heater.

thanks everyone.. those heat packs are a great idea. we might go and get everything for our emergency kit, we usually start getting ready late may for hurricane season but for goodness sake this was totally out of left field with the widespread power outages.

mckinsey you would be amazed what some people do!! When we had horses there was this one lady who insisted on keeping her horse locked in its stall during major storms while we turned out in the hurricane pastures. more than 70% Of the barn was GONE after the hurricanes, complete destruction her horse was found walking down the road several days later.

here you go. i bought one and it will keep a bedroom size room about 65-70 degs when it is about 10 deg outside. i have had to use mine twice this year when we lost power all night.

last year when we didnt have one of these we baged all of our snakes up and put them in the car with the heater on full blast for 2-days.

Re: power outage/weather problem/ what to do

This makes me glad I don't live in a place where it gets super cold...we did live in a very non-insulated house in Louisiana for a while, and of course our heater went out during a cold snap. We only had one snake at the time so we ended up carrying him around inside our shirts all day for lack of any other solution. Thankfully it was fixed that same day, otherwise I guess we would have had to sleep in shifts!

I'd say heat packs would definitely be a good idea.

Re: power outage/weather problem/ what to do

well this past christmas eve we were hit with a huge storm that knocked out power for thousands. this happened in the middle of my 1yr old and my wife having a bout of the stomach flu and puking all over...in the dark...in crazy weather.
to make a long story short, i freaked out and left the house at 6am to get to my nearest home store and bought a 9000 watt generator and hooked it up to my house with a kit i got from the same store. my teeth still hurt from holding that maglite all that time
