So I'm on the bus home from work, and it wasn't packed or anything, there was one person to each pair of seats, and one pair completely open, a young couple get on the bus and takes the last open set of seats. This older (50 or so maybe) woman sitting across the aisle from them gets up, walks over and asks me to move over so that she can sit down. I just kind blankly starred at her, thinking "why are you moving from having two seats by yourself?" at which point she says, and not quietly:

"I don't feel comfortable sitting that close to one of them black peoples"

... Loss of words after which I reply, still in my nice sweet customer service voice since I just got off work "Oh, I'm sorry, I don't feel comfortable sacrificing my own comfort just because you're racist" (I have a knack for not thinking through some things before they come out of my mouth)

AND THEN she hauls off and hits me with her purse saying that *I'm* disrespectful and screams at the bus driver to let her off immediately!

The guy in front of me is then like, "I can't believe that just happened!" and I was at a complete loss for words except to say, "I know" and then in disbelief missed my own stop which would have been the next one...

I can't believe people still think it's okay to act that way!
