Aww poor thing. It's never good when you can count ribs and see their pelvic bones. I'm glad you've decided to take him in. I can't wait to see him filled out a bit. He'll be a very handsome boy.

Yeah, he's really skinny and very hungry. He was up all night trying to get into the bag of dog food and the garbage can. We're taking him tonight to start getting his shots, and I'll definitely be feeding him a lot of good food until he's up to where he should be.

I'm not bashing you personally or anything... but why would you let a stray dog around your pet? I never understood that when people bring in stray animals, you have no idea what it may have.
I do think it is a stand up thing your bringing this animal a better life.

He had a full vet checkup before he ever walked through our door. He has no internal or external parasites, and the vet said that he's surprisingly really healthy all considering. Is there anything I should be worried about? Our vet knows about our animals and didn't show any concern about us bringing the new dog into our family.

Re: We rescued a dog yesterday
If he got a clean bill of health from your vet, I see no reason to worry - especially if your dog is up to date on its vaccines.
I would recommend you might consider crate training him, at least until he learns the rules of the house and you don't have to worry about him getting into things he shouldn't while you're sleeping!

A well-maintained fully-vaccinated adult dog who is on monthly flea & tick control and heartworm prevention can catch very little from a stray dog.
Maybe some minor intestinal buggies like giardia or coccidia, neither of which are life-threatening...All the big stuff is already protected against. Kennel cough is pretty infectious, and not all dogs are vaccinated for that, but that's more of an annoyance than anything else, and you can usually tell a kennel cough dog as soon as you see it...they have a deep "whooping" cough that they cannot supress.
I'm always more concerned about behavioral issues, but it looks like he's not having problems there. :-)
Personally, I never pass up a stray...if they look iffy, they get quarantined in the garage, but if they seem in good health and are not agressive towards other animals, I try to integrate them into the household as soon as possible so they be evaluated for rehoming. As long as you make sure to pick up the stool before your dogs come in contact with it, there's not much they can transmit. Now with cats, they get a longer quarantine period due to sharing litterboxes. I usually require at a negative FeLV/FIV test and at least one negative fecal and normal-appearing stool before they can come in.
So far, pushing close to 5 dozen strays by now, nobody in my household has picked up anything from our vagabond guests.
