    aspen causing dew/humidity on bins?

Ok, so i have aspen in all my bins.. i have the regular shredded, looks like wood aspen in all but one bin, in the other bin i have a type of aspen that would be more fitting for small animals i suppose, its fluffier, flakes instead of woody toothpicks. my humidity is around 40% with the regular reptile aspen and even lower in the other type of aspen but ive noticed a dew like droplets on the bins with reptile aspen. i would think with all the condensation it would maintain higher humidity than that.. does anyone have this happen? what do you do about it? i dont want there to be too much moisture in their bins, should i switch it out with flakey aspen for everyone since it doesnt cause the high condensation, exc i just dont want them to get RI because of all the moisture in the air.

with the flakey aspen i wouldnt mind misting or even offering a larger water bowl to create more humidity.. i just dont think "damp" conditions is very good.

I have one or two tubs that do that but typically its calms down after a day or two and I can tell when the poop or pee cause the dew comes back. You might try moving that tub to a different slot in the rack as many times cool air meeting a warm humid environment causes dew so you might have a slight draft hitting that area and its not the substrate at all.

    Hope that helps

its all the bins except the one that has the different bedding.. that would make sense if its the temperature difference. the house ambient is about 73 and their cool side of the bin (the front of the bin furthest from the heat) is roughly 83

There ya go.. you might use an oil filled heater in that room to bring that temp up just a little and see how that goes it the easiest way to fix that problem

I live in FLorida and bought a small space heater that keeps the room between 78-82. I picked one up at home depot in December. As far as the aspen where in the rack is the tub that has the condensation? Is it the top tub? My top tub has the same amount of holes as every other tub but its the one that gets condensation.

it only occurs on the front of all the bins (the part not covered by the rack)

Re: aspen causing dew/humidity on bins?

True story - got my first rack on a Saturday - got it set up with the thermostat, moved snakes into it - go to bed.

Karl gets up on Sunday makes coffee - comes to bedroom and says "your rack is steaming".

I woke up in .0025568 of a second and race to the living room just knowing my snakes are fried.

It was the condensation - no snakes were injured - I simply added more holes to the tubs and all was well.

But that was quite a wake-up call!
