    Kenyan Sand Boa

I've seen these snakes at shows several times and they have sparked my interest. I tried finding a caresheet on this site for them but I couldn't find one. Can anyone tell me a little about them. Feeding, housing, temp/humidity requirements, substrate requirements, handling, size, ect.

Oh and do you have any pictures of full grown, subadult and baby sand boas?

Here is a quick care sheet I had made up to give you a general idea.

My female is about 3 feet and 400 some odd grams. She just dropped 13 live babies last week. The babies are about the length of an adult persons ring finger but even in the litter they differ in length and size. For the most part they are pretty easy to handle. When they do bite it is a real quick flick and usually they aren't big enough to really draw blood. My male is about 130 grams. There is a big difference in length and girth between the males and females.

Here are some older pics, these are all anery.

Dang, them things kind of freak me out a little.

They are pretty neat though. I like their widdle ol heads on that massive body.

I love the way they look but have found that handling them is very different from other snakes. Their tails are quite rough, and they really are a ground boa through and through - which means they will tend not to grasp or climb and are quite awkward when handled.

We have a KSB. He is quite a cute little guy and has a great personality. Here is the low-down, straight.

Pros: Docile, easy husbandry, remain small (usually, males 2' feet, females 2.5'), very smooth scales (except tail), cute.

Cons: Possibly picky eaters, mostly burrow and come out only at night and when basking or hungry (not a display snake), slightly awkward when handled, rough tail.

Here's a picture of mine. I caught him "lying by the pool," basking the other night. He is only about 5 - 6 months old, so still small.

Here is a care sheet that I found and liked. It is from VPI's website, respected and reputable breeders.

Brian Barczyk (BHB) also breeds them. We got ours from BHB at the Chantilly, VA show last October, and have been very happy with his customer service and the snake, of course! He does the Snake Bytes show.

See my gallery for more pics. Also, I entered a picture of him in the February HOTM contest. So check that out once the contest opens for votes!

    Good luck with your decision!
