    Poor BD in bad hands.

I was buying a feeder for my Ball yesterday at the critter barn and some retarded woman brought in a baby Bearded Dragon that she had bought a week ago. Said it hadn't moved since she got it. When Dorthy (My pet lady) asked about husbandry she said she had it in a 55 gallon tank with one heat bulb. One bulb no matter what wattage will not heat a 55 gallon terrarium. Please tell anyone that is considering owning a reptile for the first time to research it first and to make sure they know about their scaly bundle of joy before they bring it home. Not sure what happened to the BD but all this could have been avoided with just a little research.

in defense of the woman... until recently i did have only one 100watt bulb for heat (uvb is separate) and it did great heating the tank. we now have two because the temps in the house have dropped some but im just sayin...

I'm guessing there is a bit of temp difference between southern florida and tennessee though.

while that is true I'm not convinced thats all this can be blamed on.... we use AC down here year round, it isnt like our home is 80-90s+ all the time.. our house inside ambient temp (away from ball rack/windows/ac vent/beardie cage/ exc im talking middle of the room temp) is about 70-73 during the day... sometimes slightly higher if were gone and turn the AC up to conserve energy. Although I hate to do it I would assume people in TN are keeping their homes warmer than we are down here where the outside temp is much hotter. but thats just my 0.02, take it for what its worth...

I personally wouldnt be so quick to make assumptions that someone is "retarded" or less capable to caring for their animals based on part of their husbandry alone.. perhaps she did have perfect husbandry and the animal wasnt healthy... or perhaps she fed it only mealworms and no salad/crickets.. go a step further and perhaps the animal wasnt all that healthy to begin with considering the PP said it was a baby bearded... a 55gal tank is WAY to big to begin with for a baby.. that has little to do with adequate heat IMO.

It could also have been something as simple as the size of the tank. If it was a few weeks old in a 55 the dragon could have been uncomfortable in so large an enclosure. When we bred them, the babies always stayed in something the size of a 10 until they reached around 4" long.......

Glad to see im not the only one who thinks this lady is an idiot based on the heat source alone... I agree with the possibility of it being due to the animals small size. We moved our beardie into her 55gal about three months ago (shes about 14" give or take tip to tip)

Re: Poor BD in bad hands.

Ive always kept one bulb in my tank, And i mean one bulb, its the powersun so thats all i need( no tube uvb lights) They do not want the whole tank hot, they just need their basking spot to be 105 degrees or so. As long as the other side isnt freezeing i do not see a problem with it.

BUT... A beardie should just stop moveing the second you move it into its tank. Something was wrong with that thing before she got it. Sounds like it could be inpacted( or paralized from impaction) or have mbd.

Come here little guy. You're awfully cute and fluffy but unfortunately for you, you're made of meat
