Untreated lumber scraps are great for rat chewies. And free if you know where to look Some lumberyards give away their "ends" for use as firewood.. I would just make sure that they are not treated lumber, and not pine or cedar, or another toxic wood (I think that black cherry and black walnut are bad as well; I would research any type of wood before using.)
