    New Rack and new additions!

Yesterday I finally got to go to Deborah's house and pick up the new rat rack that she had built for me. Let me tell you, after almost 2 years of weekly cleanings of glass enclosures, this is going to change my life! I love it, the rats seem happy with it, and it's much better ventilation than before.

First, here's the rack - thank you Deborah!

So I had to run to Petsmart to pick up these "special" water bottles that are spring loaded so that they don't leak when inverted. So, as always, I stop by the rats to see if there are any females I'd like to add as new blood, and they had a dumbo!

I adore the dumbos, I know people say that their personalities are not built into the trait, but every dumbo I've met has oozed with personality and sweetness and this girl is no exception. Exceptionally calm and inquisitive.

So as I'm having the girl write her up, she says: "I know you like to get rats from us, we have some new blues in the back that we haven't put out yet, do you want to go to the back and see them?" I told her I'd go look at them, but probably wouldn't get any - well she knew a sucker when she saw one! I knew I wouldn't get any blue hoodeds, the three I got, two died and one only had one successful litter and now lives in a private home as a pet, along with Scarlett, my russian blue - who WAS a great breeder for me, but retired. They are both beloved pets now.

Anyway - there was one blue hooded and these two irish marked girls. I couldn't choose between the two, so I took them both! No sniffles, no red porph, and sweet as can be.

I do have a question - does rex have different degrees of curling? Because one of them has wavy hair, very subtle, but thicker and definitely wavy, while the smaller of the two is very smooth and not as thick.

Here they are - along with the little girl I got from Deborah!

And Jo wanted to see how two males look in the rack. This is Caesar and Moose - Caesar is an old man and his coat shows it - he's the one in the front in this picture. Once everyone's settled, Moose will resume his rotations in the girl's tubs and Caesar will be responsible for the baby boys that are weaned and waiting to be fed off.

Moose is in the back left - he's Caesar's son.

Justin, I can only speak from my own experience, with just one blue self, that the blue selfs seem to be hardier than the the blue hoodeds that I had. We'll see if these two do as well as Scarlett did.

Now to come up with names for these four!

this may sound like a stupid question... but

I have seen tops like this before, but not in person... when you put the food on the top like that.... how do they get it?

It's 1/2 inch chicken wire (I think?) and they just reach up and nibble off of it through the wire. Much less waste that way.

Yep 1/2 inch hardware cloth for rats.

Usually no waste at all except with the crazy girl I gave you (she needs to figure it out)

Note Deb said hardware cloth, rats will chew through chicken wire like a hot knife through butter.

Great looking rat rack, I wish Deb lived close to me! I love the new ratties - very, very cute. You're so lucky Robin that your local pet stores stock anything interesting.

Names - how about Azure and Cyan? Both are shades of the color blue and I think are pretty names

Sorry , the good news is that if I can do it, I am sure you can do it to

You have the DIY and if you need explanations you know where to find me.
