Temps under hides?
How do you guys regulate your temps? When one says 80-83 cool side, 90-93 warm side....does one mean 80-83, 90-93 under the hides?
I just got another thermometer, so I have 3 total. 1 of em gets ambient on cool side, temp inside the hide with probe, plus humidity. The other side I have 1 that gets the temp under the hide and another for ambient + humidity.
The hide and ambient temps are very off and it kinda worries me. Btw I use a 60 watt lamp on the cooler end and 2 UTHs for the warmer end.
My temps are as follows:
Cooler hide: 76F
Cooler outside/ambient: 83F
Warmer hide: 94F
Warmer outside/ambient: 88F
To get the cooler end's hide up to 80-83 I would have to heat up the ambient to almost 90!!
What do you guys do regarding this?

Re: Temps under hides?
I wish i could help you more with your question's, but i do have one idea for you. I personally use temp guns. I live by them this way you dont have an octopus of wires all over the place. But it only takes a few minutes to take temps in a whole rack in any spot you choose in each tub. Just an idea, i hope this makes sense, good luck.

Re: Temps under hides?
I measure my temps under the hides because that is where my BPs spend most of thier time(requires 2 digital thermometers).Probe under each hide with those temps gives me an ambient temp of 79-80.

Wow. I'm freaking out. The thermometer must be damaged or something. I just checked and under the warmer ends hide it's whoopin 125F. There is no way that can be accurate. Outside the hide the ambient is 90 tho. I took he hide out and seems like there is less substrate under the hide so I put more, but its still 99F under there while ambient is 90.
No wonder my BP is avoiding that hide. He's in shed too, with blue eyes.
How can I work around this? Do you guys check the ambient and hide temps too?

Re: Temps under hides?
You need a thermostat or lamp dimmers to regulate your temps. Then get 2 probes (1 Acurite brand Hygro/thermometer and 1 normal t-meter with a probe) use them to set temps..I use a probe under each hide and the Acurite unit stays inside the habitat and measures ambient and humidity and it gives you a reading for the hide(probe temp). The smaller thermometer stays outside and you just run the probe inside the tank into the hide. That heater will burn your snake!!! this should get you fixed up..2 dimmers @ $10 ea, 1 Acurite @ $12, 1 normal T-meter w/probe @ $7...
Get it fixed soon..Most UTH heaters without some type of regulation device(Dimmer or Thermostat) can and will burn your snake. They only reall sense heat at their head and therefore can have their head in a spot that is perfect and simultaneously be cooking their body without realizing it!!!
Cute snakes ...but not too bright!!!

Sorry, I should have mentioned this. I have two thermostats. Up until now they have successfully kept temperatures under control. I used to have two thermometers. One with a probe in the warmer hide, and the other other ambient outside the cooler end. Warmer was always constant 90-94, but now for some stupid reason it won't stay constant. I'm using the Accurite thermometer for in-hide and flukers ambient/hydro gauge for humidity.

Hi,
This is why we recomend you set the temps directly on the bottom surface of the tank to around 93-95f then adjust the depth of the substrate till it reads 90-93f inside the hide.
There is no gaurantee that your snake will not decide to burrow down one day and possibly come into contact with higher temps than you planned.
Not to say this is what you did but figured having it in the thread might help others later.
