That's not exactly true. The lavender I just posted pictures of has a perfect motley pattern almost a fourth of the way down his body and a perfectly clear belly to that point. And after that his checks start and the pattern breaks up. He's not a motley. I also hatched a normal het several genes including motley that had a fantastic motley pattern about a third of the way down. Connected saddles on top don't mean much. There is a difference between the color from the top bleeding into the belly area and the checkers that are found on a normal pattern. If It just has color from the sides/top bleeding into the belly area, then it is a motley. If it has checkers and color bleeding or just checkers, then it isn't a motley.
