My old high school went into Lockdown..

How scary. Its been on the news this morning. They found an erratic teenager in the parking lot with a Shotgun in plain view. He was reported missing early this morning by his mom, and that he was acting "eratic".

When I was a Junior we were evacuated for a bomb threat. It was very scary.

Now I live in a small town, not too small, but well its a lot smaller than Boise Id. This is happening so frequently here and in the Spokane area. What the heck is with kids today? I just don't understand it. At least once a week there is a lockdown, or threat somewhere.

I guess I just don't understand the need for violence.
My children are 3 and 4. I am terrified to send them off to school, and every time something like this occurs my anxiety gets worse.

It almost seems as though we need better school security than we do national security Kids are supposed to feel safe at school, and learn with out the constant fear of something horrible happening.

Sorry just had to rant a little.

They haven't said yet. All the articles just say he left with camo clothes on and that he may have fire arms. I guess the police were waiting for him on the Campus of both High Schools here and when they found him he had one weapon and maybe more.

Hopefully he doesn't just get a slap on the wrist like most of our judges here seem to see as good punishment. He obviously has major problems.

Just be glad nobody died in this one!!!
These teenage rampages are getting all to frequent. 2 involving random target shootings here in the past couple months

Following, 1 dead while stopping at taco bell up the street for food for her father!
I very rarely get emotional about these things but after driving by and seeing this poor girls crime scene and bystanders, it reminded me of a movie, they were screaming kneeling down, almost made me feel like crying
    http://www.ketv.com/news/15111995/detail.html

9 dead at Von Maur while shopping on an early afternoon, not long before christmas.
    http://www.ketv.com/news/14883075/detail.html

It seems we aren't safe anymore with all these random acts. Most of the time, there is motive behind these crimes and if you keep your nose clean, you should be ok, not with these random shootings. Its sad but I guess it all goes down to our wrong doings and flaws as people. If you are crazy enough to hold up a school, go on a rampage, or in general shoot an inncent person, there is obviously something flawed in your mental process.

Schools will never be safe. In todays day an age, it is IMPOSSIBLE to make schools 100% safe. To many activities and students coming and going at a normal school to regulate all of it. It is unfortunate, but doesn't look like there is an end in sight.

The cause of random shootings? It is anyone's guess. My guess is, that there are more people being born now, and the population is rising. Thus, more psychopaths. I watched a really eye-opening show on Discovery Channel, regarding true psychopaths. They are incapable mentally to feel pity, remorse. Their inhibitions are low, or nonexistent. When caught by authorities, they plainly state that, let go, they would kill/molest again. These people were put into an MRI scanner, and their brains actually were abnormal. Terrifying.. I know that health conditions as well, can cause people to snap. Brain tumors, mental illness. It is a fine line to weed out the true criminals, who get happy from hurting others, from the ill that honestly can't help it and are as able to control themselves, as a person with a physical illness is able to control the illness.
It just disgusts me. I am a big gun advocate, and I love shooting for target practice, and eventually I plan on getting my hunting license. Things like this are just such a huge step backward for responsible shooters.. what a shame. I liken it to our snake-keeping actually. So much misunderstanding and fear out there for the hobby. And when someone's irresponsible, and lets their snake harm or kill another person.. huge steps backward I really wish that the human race could evolve for a change instead of going backwards.
People can parade gun-control around as the answer to all violent crime. I assure you; if guns are taken away from law-abiding citizens, the only people that'll have them, are the criminals. They get them now, they would get them then.
Another thing regarding guns.. the media focuses so much on the negative shootings. You never see a news clip of a responsible dad showing his kids how to target practice with an antique gun that belonged to his father's father, or something cute like that!

Re: My old high school went into Lockdown..

Hmmm... with the difficulty of acquiring firearms and ammo in the US, you'd think these horrific situations would be more infrequent.

I am not making light of the situation, but that thought goes through my head every time I read about these things and hear people ask, "How could this happen?"

In fairness it happens all over the world. In nations that have more restricted gun access, kids who are determined enough will use other means. In Japan one school kid brought a sword to class, cut off a classmates head, and stuck it on the gated fence outside. Also, America is a big place, so I guess statistically - in conjunction with the ease of access to firearms and other weapons - you are bound to see more then comparably smaller nations.

    That's just my armchair conjecture.

In any regard, my sincerest thoughts and wishes go out to the kids, families and communities who've been affected by this tragedy. May there never be another.

I agree 100% when it comes to guns. There are far too many negative stories about them than people being responsible. Then again, the media feeds off of the bad stuff, and people enjoy the drama as long as it isn't in their lives. Like our reptiles, not too many good stories, always the ones where the "poisonous pythonboa that was 20ft long" attacks its owner, its all bad stories and wrong info.

Guns aren't bad, as long as they are in the right hands.

Its really much easier than you think. I know for a fact in my area (10-11 BIG highschools of 2000 or more kids at each) I could walk on to a campus and could probably eat lunch at a school and walk out and never be questioned. Not sure how different it is anywhere else, but probably not much.

I'm honestly shocked it doesn't happen more often.
