The Trade

Well we finally found a home for Aurora. Of course, we had to do a trade. The woman we gave Aurora to needed to find a home for her daschund who was being aggressive towards her baby and I needed a home for Aurora who needed room to run. It was the perfect trade. We gave her Aurora who will now live in their outdoor dog run and we would take Flash, their male daschund, who other than being aggressive to their baby is an absolute sweetheart (not to mention housebroken). Right now he is sitting in my fiance's lap getting attention. Oh and did I mention he likes to wear clothes. He has holiday outfits.

We'll be finding him a home soon but in the meantime, we like his company....so far.

And I already have two parties that are possibly interested in the daschund. My brother and my fiance's friend, so we'll see how things work out.

One thing, however. I noticed while playing with Flash that is tail has a kink in it. Should I be worried? It feels like the bones were broken at some point but Flash doesn't seem to feel any pain when I touch the kink. Perhaps I should mention it to my vet when I take our ferret and cat in for vaccinations.

Sounds like you got Aurora a more appropriate home, Jay. I would mention to your vet about the new dog's tail issue and perhaps have it looked at or an agreement that the new owner will do so.

I grew up around a doxie and while they are fantastic little dogs the one we had was also not terribly trustworthy around small children. We had to watch her more than the over 100 lb GSD we had at the same time. You'll want to make sure any new owner is aware of this tendency and makes allowances for safety when walking her. I would think a no kids home would be best and perhaps the introduction of a halter style face collar (to control any nipping attempts while out in public).

The kink sounds weird. My cat actually has a kink in the last 2 inches of his tail. Our vet said that it was nothing to worry about, as it was already healed up and hardened into place when we got him. If it feels fresh, or causes him pain when handled, I would go to a vet. Might be a good idea anyway with a new dog.

The kink is definatly not new. He doesn't even look at me when I touch it so I'm guessing its an old injury. Its in the last two inches of his tail and seems hardened into place so I'll mention it to the vet next week.

The two people who are interested in him are my brother and a friend of my fiance's. There are no small children in either household but I will definatly make a point to let them know about his aggressive behavior towards babies and small children. He is definatly a cutie pie though. I'll post pics tonight.

Typically with something like this just describing it to your vet will suit, no need to bring him in unless what you describe concerns the vet. When you're in next let him/her know the location, size, and density of the bump.

The most common causes of a kink or bump like this are:
An old injury (tail in the door)
Birth defect (vertebra fusing together abnormally)
Calcium deposit - typically only serious in a joint area, or if resulting from a deficiency or over abundance of certain minerals.

Things to watch (and which imply greater concern) are:
Is it pliable at all (ie could there be retained fluid)
If it appears tender, or becomes tender
If it increases in mass
If it impedes normal movement or daily action

Working at the vets we'd see this all the time, mostly in cats.... And almost always because the tail had been caught in a closing door...
