please help, new rescue BP has possible mouthrot

I just got a Bp that has hard, black stuff in its mouth along the upper jaw where the teeth should be and a little on the lower jaw. This causes its mouth to not shut all of the way. Could someone tell me how to treat this?

I couldn't remove the black tissue witha wet Q-tip, it is very hard. Is this healing mouthrot or beginning mouthrot?

Thank you so much in advance!

I have no idea but you need to take that snake to the vet NOW. If it is mouth ,it's nothing to mess around with, and won't simply go away.

It sounds more serious to me, to be honest. But I'm not qualified to say. I can only give you free advice... and when it comes to health, you get what you pay for...

Sounds like scabs. You will have to take him to a vet to clear up whatever caused it in the first place.

Here are some links to help you find a vet near you:

    http://www.arav.org/USMembers.htm
    http://www.anapsid.org/vets/index.html#vetlist
    http://www.herpvetconnection.com/

And here's a list of vets personally recommended by members here: http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/s...ad.php?t=56792
If you'd like to add your own herp vet to that list, send a PM to frankykeno with their contact info and a brief note about why you like them.

Thanks guys. I have an appointment at the local vet hospital (CSU) in thirty minutes! I am glad this is a Friday and not a Sunday...phew!

Thank you for the sound advice. I will post again when we figure it out and I have had her treated.

Re: please help, new rescue BP has possible mouthrot

Alright, we are back from the exotic animal hospital. Thank you to all of you who gave me sound advice!

It turned out that the black stuff was merely coconut husk from her old owner's bedding, that she must have gotten in her mouth when eating or crawling around. There were several large chunks but the vet removed them easily and checked her over as well as sexing her. She had no mouthrot!!!! Yay!!!!!! (does happy dance)

She is indeed a "she", she is a Mojave as well (good find, eh?). I will post pictures once she has settled in and eaten for me at least once. He said that besides being on the skinny side, she is apparently healthy and looks free of parasites (at least external ones). She will be quarantined and hopefully will start feeding for me next week (at least I will try to feed her).

Thank you all again for the good advice! I feel much better now that she can close her mouth properly and is free from nasty splinters. This is why I have always used paper towels for my snakes.

    Thanks again!

Re: please help, new rescue BP has possible mouthrot

Thanks JLC! I am pretty excited about her. I hope she has no more issues now. She is a sweetie and deserves better treatment than she was getting. Now I just need to prepare myself in case she doesn't feed for me, but hopefully she won't have issues now that her mouth isn't ouchy!

I'll post lots of pics after she has eaten for me and digested well!
