Hermit Crabs
Ummm.. I've been reading that hermit crabs need salt water but am not sure what the ratio should be. Does anyone know?
Also, what is a "good" diet for them? I have commercial food, but How much of that should I give and should I supplement it with other foods? If so, What?
If you could answer these questions, that would be great. I'm going to try and get a book on them soon......
Thanks

Re: Hermit Crabs
found this in the FAQ section
· 8. How do I create an 'Ocean Water Pond'
You can create an 'Ocean Water Pool' by adding five tablespoons (5tbspns) of Instant Ocean brand Marine Salt to a Gallon (4 Litres) of water. This equates to roughly 1 1/4 tablespoon per Quart/Litre.
This solution can keep for up to a week. Make sure that you shake the solution if ithas been left to stand thus to dissolve any undissolved salt crystals.
Other quality brands which may be used include CoralSea, Oceanic, ReefCrystals from AquariumSystems, and TropicMarin. Each brand should be mixed according to the instructions, but diluted to the suggested 50% Natural Sea Water solution as advised in Philippe deVosjoli.

I love Hermit crabs, they are so interesting but I have never been able to successfully keep them alive, so, instead of being a crab massacre station I just admire them from afar. Good luck with yours.

Wow! I never knew they needed salt water. I don't think we were ever told that when I kept them as a child (this was 25+ years ago though).

Re: Hermit Crabs
actually, even if you buy hermit crabs now they don't tell you how to properly take care of them.
i've never kept them because it seems like a lot of work, i know about 5 people that kept and killed hermit crabs because they thought you just had to put them in a tank with sand and feed them a little food every once in a while.

Re: Hermit Crabs
Ya. Well, They are still alive. Does anyone know any tricks on getting them to eat? I've been offering them fresh fruit, lettuce and commercial feed, but they aren't eating.... Hmmmmm...

Re: Hermit Crabs
Thanks. Hopefully they will start to eat soon. I think that they may have eaten some of the commercial food, but I'm not sure. They may have just spilled it. lol
