Bp.net Chat
Please keep BALLPYTHON & other herp related questions/discussions for the forums. Thanks!
I understand that this is a forum, a place to come ask questions and try to get answers concerning the problem. I also understand that when you post your question in the forum the info is searchable for the members and guest of the site...In which turns this site into a wealth of information.
Recently a chat section was added to the site. I have seen a lot of members that have not been here in a week come in and say great we have a chat. They start to talk about herp’s and are told not to do that here. Therefore A lot of the regular members are no looking for a place that bp.net friend's will be able to go to chat instead of staying on one of the best site's on the internet www.Ball-pythons.net.
I don’t know what the best solution would be but a lot of people come the to site for info and see a friend in the chat and start talking and one thing Leeds to another and someone ask how your snakes breeding and then there told by someone else that, that they are not aloud to talk about herp’s on a herp site chat. In a way it does not make sense.
I love this site and I am not here to cause problems only to help provide solutions,
Thanks for listening and have a great day

Re: Bp.net Chat
im not a fan of the chat box, so i dont usually use it. but whats the reason for not being allowed to use the chat box for herp related questions? who cares if someone is talking about herps?? I mean it is part of a herp forum.

Re: Bp.net Chat
I think you raise an excellent point, HalfDawg. I do understand the reasoning behind the chat rule, they want to keep valuable searchable-information in the forums so that it's lasting, and a resource. However, if someone pops into chat and asks if we can house two snakes together, if their snake has an RI, or any number of oft-posted questions--I don't see why yet another thread needs to be created so we can all say "No, you can't." and "If you think your snake has an RI, you should bring it to the Vet.", yet again.
And during breeding season, I don't see why the forum needs a play-by-play of who locked up with whom and what we've got in the incubator, and that breeders should be able to talk about that in the chat box if they want to. Usually breeding-related posts are accompanied by pictures, and those aren't in danger of being eliminated from the forums by talking about the day-to-day stuff in the chat room.
I do understand that questions might be asked that are better put in a forum post. I trust that if people are using the chat room and such a question is asked, the people in the chat room are intelligent enough to say that the forum would be a better place to get more extensive discussion/answers on a topic.
This is my .02. I appreciate the mods and Admins and all that they do, and I'm sure that the reasoning behind the rule seemed sound...but it does essentially render the chat box useless for the most part. Herp site = Herp chat? Seems logical to me.

Re: Bp.net Chat
I think you may be missing the point that herp related questions are restricted from chat, not simply talking about herps.
The reasons for this make sense if you take a moment to think about it.
1) Archive - chat only archives 2 days. You ask a quesiton, you get a wonderful response...and that response and all the learning that can come from it for many people is gone in 2 days. That's a waste of valuable resources the whole community can share in.
2) Good vs bad advice - You come into chat, you ask a husbandry related question, maybe it's a very important one. You get an answer from some name in some chat room, not a lot of responses from a wide group of our members so that you can gather that group wisdom as it should be and always has been here.
3) Impact on the BPNet - If questions are continually asked and answered in chat it will eventually affect our thread postings. That will impact this community you care about and it will not likely be a good thing.
Enjoy chat for what it is folks, a place to chat. We haven't put many rules at all on the chat other than this and family friendly content.

Re: Bp.net Chat
Greetings folks. I hope everyones keeping well this Sunday evening.
First let me clarify that what you see above the forums is not a "full blown" chat program. MGC chat box was built with the purpose of letting members of a forum leave casual messages for one another ... more like shoot the wind/give a shout out kinda thing. This was the purpose that I had in mind when I installed the software.
Reiterating: This is not a program made for full blown chatting. I will be bringing back flash chat for that particular purpose sometime in the future and all discussions are allowed.
I've stated previously that information in chat does not get archived and will not be useful for anyone in the long run. Granted there will be many repeated threads in the forum on any given subject, I'd rather have that on any given day of the week than see it get discussed in the chat. Please don't see us as nasty Ogres for placing this constraint. The reasons for this are vital!
Many of you do not know this, but I do a lot of search engine optimization for the site so that we continue to draw new members well into the future. Search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask etc notice site activity by the number of URL's generated by the forums(chat is completely ignored since it's not archived). The more threads/posts that we generate, the higher our rankings and better the chances of someone finding our site.
This may all sound like gobbledigoop to some of you all but I ask that you trust me on this issue. I will bring "Flash chat," a program designed exclusively for chatting, back sometime in the future and I request that everyone be a little bit more patient till then. Thanks!

Re: Bp.net Chat
The whole point was that we didn't want people to "depend" on chat to be their place to ask all their questions, simply because they felt they'd get quicker answers.
There's no problem to talk about a pick-up you did at the show, or about your animals locking or exciting things going on. Heck, we were even discussing the Reptile Radio show while it was on live. No problem to ask how someone's snakes are doing, or congratulate them on a pickup you may have read about, or congratulate Larry on his LA's.
But to pop into to chat only to ask all your husbandry or set-up questions and not use the forums because someone may be an "I've got to have an answer NOW!" personality, no - chat is not appropriate for that.
There have already been some members who were consistently asking basic husbandry questions every time they had a question that was better asked on the forums (and not participating in chat for any other reason but to ask basic care questions). They received PM's asking them to please post on forums, after they were asked repeatedly in chat to, and ignored us. They were not yelled at.
Joanna and Raj also presented excellent reasons why chat "lite" is set up like it is.
