I started collecting mice for a breeder colony two weeks ago... one of the females I got had been looking real chubby the last couple days... I kind of figured I had gotten one that was already preggers. I moved it and two other females to a new bin two days ago. This evening she delivered 12 babies. I am amazed that so many little babies fit inside this tiny little mouse! The two other females are helping out as I had hoped but one has died already and was eaten... ick. I will see if I can get some pics in a few days as I don't want to disturb them.

This site has been such an informative place. Even though I haven't posted, I am reading all the time. Thanks for all the advice and info!!

PS should I be concerned that the mama is a black mouse? I have been reading that the white mice make better moms and are more friendly.... she isn't any more or less friendly so far than any of the others when we handle them, I am just wondering.

I didn't mean anything bad about my comment. I have just read a lot here and on other sites that the albino mice seem to be better breeders. Sorry if I offended anyone... I should have worded it differently.

lol, wow. I wasn't even reading it that way. I've read that white/PEW rats have large litters, but as for the color of mice affecting how well they raise their young, I haven't heard anything like that. But, I'm not into mice.

sorry about her eating them. as for color effecting the parental skills i've never heard of that, but i did have an albino mouse give birth to about 10 and eat every one of their heads. don't believe every thing you hear, i had a pet store worker tell me to feed rats the opposite of your skin color (if you're white feed black rats) he said if your white and you feed a white rats then the snake will think your hand is a rat. i said if you smell like a rat color doesn't matter, but he wouldn't budge on this (you know how some these pet store employees are they think they know every thing when they know nothing)
