new corn

should i change anything and should i shut the heat light off at night? i forgot to get humidity and temp gauges so what is a good, accurate kind to get? also what would happen if the humidity was off for a day? anything serious?

Well, since they don't really need much humidity unless shedding, having it be low for a bit shouldn't hurt at all.

You should pick up a digital termometer/hygrometer ASAP...Acurite is great for a low price. Also, give him two hides one on each side, and see if you can make that water dish much smaller. I like the vine and plants, tho. Also, are you heating it only with that light? If so, get yourself a UTH sized for the tank and put it under one side on a thermostat or dimmer for a proper gradient.

yeah its heat lamp on one side (with the plant) and uth on the other (water bowl) where would i go to get an accurite? and should i shut the heat lamp off at night? yeah that last question is probably pretty stupid...

Sweet. Well, it's a nice looker regardless of sex. Congrats.

You can keep a light for day and even one for night on timers, but just make sure the bulb is a low wattage. Corns only need their temps from upper 80's (88)on the warm side to the mid 70's (75)on the low, and a UTH should do that all by itself in a small tank.

Yes, turn off the visible light at night. As I said, you can get a night bulb if you like - blue is best and of a low wattage.

For Acurites, head to Lowes or Walmart. They're only around $13 there, found in the garden or outdoor thermometer section.

Cute corn there! And nice setup.

Do you have a UTH or are you just using the heat lamp? If you are just using the heatlamp, then I probably wouldn't shut it off, just keep an eye on the temps, and use a thermostat with the lamp. But from my experience, I use a UTH with my corn's tank and it has been great at keeping the temps perfect.

As far as a temp/humidity gauge I would go with an accurite, they are found at most walmarts and I think I read on here that someone found one at a Lowes. The kind that I have reads two temps (one from the base unit and one from a probe) and also reads the humidity as well. I use them in all of my snake enclosures and they have been wonderful!!


And as far as humidity, mine has been doing fine with the ambient humidity in my house (which usually is around 40 - 45% near the snake enclosures). If I notice that he is going into shed, I try to bump up humidity for him a little, but I have noticed that even in the ambient humidity he still sheds perfectly. So if your humidity is off by a little for a short while then I wouldn't really worry about it. Looking again at the caresheet for corns on this site, it doesn't even list a specific humidity other than just the ambient humidity of the home it lives in.

he seems fine today i woke up and found him coiled up in his tree so i think the cage setup is working out... also, should i wait a couple days before handling him?

Corns I find are a hardy snake and can withstand some weird things.
Yours like great with the bring colors!
Good luck with you setup and open tip from me is, "Don't let the humidity get too high!" I did that and my corn got scale rot really easy. And it is taking more time for it to go away then it did too come!
