You can keep a light for day and even one for night on timers, but just make sure the bulb is a low wattage. Corns only need their temps from upper 80's (88)on the warm side to the mid 70's (75)on the low, and a UTH should do that all by itself in a small tank.
Yes, turn off the visible light at night. As I said, you can get a night bulb if you like - blue is best and of a low wattage.
