    Good Starting Combos?

Hello all I am currently interested in starting up a ball project. I was curious what everyone thought would be the most rewarding and interesting project in regards to what morphs I should start out with. I currently only have 1 normal male ball.

I am currently looking at getting a male albino along with a female het. and a 1.1 pastel pair. With these 2 pairs its gonna run me $1300 via a payment plan.

Do you guys think I should go along with this plan or invest in something else such as spiders or something else?

Any tips or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

    ~Adam

I think your plan sounds great. Its ultimately up to you what you want to work with. Make sure its an animal you will love to see all the time for the next few decades since you'll be the one cleaning up after it. It just makes it all that much nicer if its something that speaks to you.

    Good luck with your decision.

    Re: Good Starting Combos?

personally as a start up breeder myself, im sticking to visual co dom's and doms. saves me guess work on possible hets so i dont have to hold back as much. and season 1 for me my pastels and spiders can find new homes (minus a few hold backs!) and that cash goes back into the ball python investment!

but chico... as tony montana from scarface said. "the world is yours"

just have fun with what YOU want.

    Re: Good Starting Combos?

Adam, it really depends on what you like and want to make. I hated hearing that when I was starting out several years ago, but I've come to realize that it is so true. I bought a pair of ghosts, not becasue I loved them but because another breeder told me I couldn't do without a ghost pair in my breeding colony. Unfortunately, I still don't like many ghost combos . . .

Having said that, you may want to consider not purchasing your males this year, only your females. Since females take at least a year longer to mature, you can buy the females, grow them for a year while you're saving for your males. By next year there may be something new you want to put with your females. That will give you some extra $$ to spend now on your payment plan.

Since you are talking about making albinos and pastels and not wanting to go over what you have budgeted, you may want to consider a spider female now to make bees or albino spiders in the future. Another good idea IMHO is to buy a black pastel female - you could then make pewters (blask pastel plus your future pastel male) or black pastel albinos, a very cool new combo. Another idea is a pinstrip female - with your pastel male you could be making lemon blasts. Finally you may want to consider a mojave female - paired with a mojave male you could be making white snakes in the future if you are so inclinced. As you can see, the possibilities are endless and are only restricted by what you want/like and your $$.

Good luck and don't forget to tell us what you end up buying and of course post pics for us to drool over.

I too am weary with the recessives...don't have the years to devote at this stage of my life. I would say throw in an uncommon co-dom in the equation

    Re: Good Starting Combos?

I really took to the albinos and axanthics, and that's where I was starting, until I was able to start getting good looks at the pieds.

Whatever you can afford, and are willing to clean up after. Me?? I don't have the money for the recessives, and I REALLY want a pied, albino and axanthic ball, so I'm willing to invest in the time to raise up the 1.1 het pairs that I was able to buy. But I'm looking at spiders. I'd love to have a few bees. yummmmmm! Right now I can't continue to invest in babies for later breeding, but eventually that's where my plans are headed.

Whatever gets your heart pumping, and the drool starting is what you want to get, but you've also got to be able to AFFORD it....or any losses that might happen.......God forbid, but don't spend more than you can afford to lose!

    Good luck in your decision!
