Re: aspen or repti bark
Just depends on what you like, they are both good some people swear by aspen and others repti-bark. I use cypress mulch.

I use Sani-chips (uber small aspen chips). They're amazing; I'll never use anything else.

If you are buying reptibark at a pet store it will be very expensive over time. It is an ok substrate but the aspen shavings are much better in my opinion. Plus, you can find bulk aspen bedding in bulk at shows or on beanfarm.com.
I cut my substrate costs by 3/4 when I started using bulk aspen.

Re: aspen or repti bark
Yep, depends on your personal desires for ease of cleaning, looks, and cost. After trying out carpet (too much work), Newsprint (no humidity), and cypress (looks good, good humidity, but sharp pieces), I finally landed on aspen and I love it. As they said, you can get it in bulk, even at Petsmart ($11 for a huge bag), and it holds humidity well without mold or anything. Since I also use it for my mice and rats, I just buy up a big bag and store it all in a giant plastic bin.
